James Christopher Hicks passed away on September 3, 2015 at Melech Hospice House surrounded by a loving family. Jim made his first appearance in this world at Tampa General Hospital on June 16, 1933. With his parents and Cecil P. Hicks, he moved to Port Tampa where he enjoyed the pleasure of a small town.
His education was gained at West Shore Jr. High, H.B. Plant High School, and University of Tampa – until the Army called. A different type of education began; he was a cryptologist for 6 years. he then settled to life in Manhattan, attending City College in NY city, traveling the world on great vacations for 40 years. Eventually he retired and returned to Port Tampa, now a larger small town. Jim was happy to enjoy Florida again.
He was predeceased by his mother, father , and step-mother, Irma, a lady that Jim described as the “best thing” that ever happened to him. Two special friends in New York have continued that relationship over time: Bill Lloyd and Hal Calvert. Also surviving in the Tampa area are cousins and their families. When Jim died on September 3, 2015 he began travels on a different path. We all wish him an angelic life!
A service will be held for James Hicks with full military honors at Florida National Cemetery on September 16, 2015.
The family invites you to sign his guestbook below.
It is always a pleasure to serve such a great family. God bless you all.
Jim was our tenant at Fair Oaks Condominiums for the past several years. He regaled us with many tales of his time in the Army, living in New York, and memories of his family, particularly his step-mother. He suffered through some very troublesome people who lived in the unit above him with grace and patience. We had our last visit with him in May, and his mind was still sharp, though his body was failing. We had no idea that was the last time we would seem him this side of Heaven. We shall miss him, and We pray his friends and family find peace and comfort.
Being a proud veteran myself,I want to thank you for your service, and hope to meet you in heaven.Patricia(Franks)Watson(USAF).
