(Liberty) Sutherland and passed away at the Suncoast Hospice in Palm Harbor, Florida on February 14, 2016, with his family at his bedside.  He was raised in Worcester and at the age of 17, Robert was featured in the newspaper as the “Youngest Chef in Worcester County”.  At 18, he enlisted in the US Navy, where he was trained in torpedo motoring and was the US Navy Head Chef.  He served his country for 8 years before being honorably discharged.  He went on to become a restaurant entrepreneur, building a chain of take-out restaurants featuring fish and chips which became so successful that he was publicized as “The King of Fish and Chips” in the Worcester newspaper.  Known for his sense of humor, Robert loved telling jokes.  His favorite hobbies included fishing, square dancing with his wife, Betty, playing cards, billiards and tinkering in his workshop.  He was a skilled carpenter and handyman who constructed his own home in Shrewsbury and was always willing to lend a hand to family and friends with various home improvement jobs.  Robert married his high school sweetheart, Betty and was a devoted and loving husband for over 60 years.  He and Betty settled in Florida, which became their final resting place.

Predeceased in death by his parents and his wife, Robert is survived by his loving family: his daughters; Donna Frey and her husband, Robert of Largo, Florida and Linda Mariano and her husband, Gary of Palm Harbor, Florida; a brother, David Sutherland and his wife, Jane of Framingham, Massachusetts; nine grandchildren: Christine, Lisa, Michelle, and Rachel Mariano,  Michael Materazzi and his wife Nannette, Lianne Riley and her husband, Kevin, Jeffrey Solomon, Steven Solomon and his wife Amy, Jody Gaucher and her husband Mike, and great grandchildren, Juliana Materazzi, Sarah and Daniel Solomon, Nikki and Kaci Gaucher.
