Dwayne Allen Freeborn, 57, of Belleair Beach Florida funeral service is 3:00 pm, Thursday, May 12, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks, 12685 Ulmerton Road, Largo, Florida 33774 with Pastor Scott Harris, to officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 pm until the service time. Graveside services will be 1:30 PM, Friday, May 27, 2016 at the Bay Pines National Cemetery, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., Bay Pines, Florida 33744 with the US Navy Honors Team and United States Marine Corps # 54 Honor Guards officiating.
Born in Grand Forks North Dakota, and then moved to Turkey and lived there from 1960-1962 then to Alaska in 1962 and finally settled in Colorado in 1967. He grew up and resided there until he joined the Navy on May 12th, 1976.
Dwayne served in the US Navy as a Ordnance Mechanic, a Undersea Weapons man, Corrections Specialist and Rigging and Weight Testing Shop Foreman. He served aboard the USS HUNLEY (AS-31); USS SAMUEL GOMPERS (AD37) and the USS ACADIA (AD42). During his career, he was awarded the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (7 Awards); Navy “E” Ribbon (4 Awards); 45 Cal. Pistol Expert Ribbon; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (5 Awards); Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Meritorious Unit Commendation (3 Awards); Good Conduct Awards (3 Awards); Southwest Asia Service Medal w 1 Bronze Star; National Defense Service Medal; Humanitarian Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (2 Award) and graduated from the Instructor Service Training School. He retired from the Navy on October 31, 1994.
After retiring from the US Navy; he worked for a civilian contractor at Mac Dill AFB and most recently for the Veterans Administration. He was born on January 30, 1959 in Fargo, North Dakota to Jack and Gayl (Roggow) Freeborn and passed away at his residence on May 8, 2016 in Belleair Beach, Florida.
Dwayne is survived by his wife, Stephanie Freeborn of Belleair Beach, Florida; two sons, Derek Freeborn of Aurora, Colorado and Zane Prestwood of Seminole, Florida; his daughter, Lauren Prestwood of Seminole, Florida; his mother, Gayl Freeborn of Parker, Colorado and his two sisters; Michelle Cary and her husband, John of Elizabeth, Colorado and Cindy and Craig Smith of Westminster, Colorado; his grandma, Shirley Daffern of Anchorage, Alaska; and a niece, Jackie Freeborn-Johnson and husband Pat Johnson, and their children Grayson and Jacob
