Arestides “Steve” Cavadias-US Navy-Retired


CWO3 Arestides “Steve” Cavadias, 67, of Hudson, Florida served our nation in the United States Navy for over 32 years.

Arestides Cavadias (also know as Steve or Artie), ended his earthly journey on November 18, 2016 surrounded by family and friends at Marliere Hospice Care Center in New Port Richie, Florida at the age of 67.
Steve was born on August 22, 1949 in New York, New York. After the passing of his father, Damaskinos Cavadias, the family moved to Athens, Greece in 1958.  Steve attended Elliniki Paedia School where he excelled in school and soccer.  After his graduation in 1967, Steve returned to the United States.
In 1971, Steve married Betty Stiefel and together they had 3 children: Edward, Steve, and Ann.  In 1992, he married Tammy Holt and together they had 2 sons: Dac and Stasi.  In 2003, Steve married his soulmate Sandy Parks. Steve and Sandy have spent 17 wonderful, amazing years together. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, traveling and spending time at his favorite hang out, Dunkin Donuts in Holiday, FL.

Military History and Awards

CWO3 Arestides “Steve” Cavadias enlisted in the US Navy on December 11, 1967 in New York, New York and medically retired from the US Navy on February 1, 1999 serving during the Vietnam War Era, the Gulf War Era and the Kuwait Liberation Era. His awards and decorations include the Armed Forces Expedition Medal; Combat Action Ribbon; Fleet Marine Force Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters; Humanitarian Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; Joint Meritorious Unit Award; Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait); Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia); Meritorious Unit Commendation; National Defense Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal; Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; Navy “E” Ribbon with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters; Navy Expeditionary Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; Navy Pistol Sharpshooters Ribbon; Navy Rife Sharpshooters Ribbon; Navy Unit Commendation Republic of Vietnam Medal; Sea Service Deployment Medal with 8 oak leaf clusters; Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters; Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the  Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist Insignia.  He career field was a Surface Engineer Technician and his schooling was the Officer Introduction School; Boiler Water Feed Water School; Engineering Propulsion Fuels and Oils School; Certification of CPR School and the  Career Information and Training School.  He was medically retired on February 1, 1999 form the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois.

Family

CWO3 family includes wife, Sandra “Sandy” Cavadias of New Port Richey, Florida; his mother, Sussana (Vlasopoulou) Matarangas of Bergenfield, New Jersey; his sons: Edward Cavadias and his wife, Teresa of Charleston, South Carolina; Arthur Cavadias and his wife, Rosangel Alceqyez of Tenafly, New Jersey; Scott Lookabaugh and his wife, Codi of Grants Pass, Oregon; Damaskinos Cavadias of Charleston, South Carolina and Anastasios Cavadias of Charleston, South Carolina; daughters:  Ann Kirby and her husband, Kory of Summerville, South Carolina; Kerri Lookabaugh of Spring Hill, Florida and Kelli Lookabaugh of Spring Hill, Florida; a brother, Gerasimos Cavadias of Bergenfield, New Jersey; a sister, Olga Johnson and her husband, Walter of Holiday, Florida; twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Services

The family will have a service at 11:00 AM, on Friday, November 25, 2016 at the ST. Raphael Nicholas and Irene Orthodox Mission, 32888 US Highway 19 North,

Palm Harbor, Florida  34682 with Father George Ioannou, to officiate.  The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 AM until his service time.

Graveside Services

Full military honors by the United States Navy and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209 will be at 2:30 Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW  102nd Avenue, Bushnell, Florida  33513.

The family requests, that in lieu of flowers, to please make a donation to the “Fisher House”, c/o Bay Pines VA Hospital,   10000 Bay Pines Blvd., Bay Pines, Florida  33744 in the memory of CWO3 Arestides “Steve” Cavadias.
