Albert Frederick Cabana was born on November 23, 1923 to Edward and Eva (Taddeo) Cabana in Newport, Rhode Island. He passed away on January 24, 2017 at his home under the care of Suncoast Hospice. He is survived by his wife, Filimena, and a loving family.
Military History
Albert joined the Navy on October 20, 1942 in Providence, Rhode Island and was honorably discharged on November 7, 1945. He was a Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class on the USS Sea Cat, a Balao-class WWII Submarine, which saw extensive activity in the Pacific Theater during World War II. According to multiple sources
the USS Sea Cat was responsible for destroying nearly 400 tons of enemy ships by gunfire
and picked up two enemy survivors for interrogation before returning to Pearl Harbor on June 25, 1945. As a Gunner’s Mate, Albert would have been responsible for the maintenance and operation of the missile launching systems, ordinances, and small arms aboard the Sea Cat. Albert’s service aboard the USS Sea Cat and how that service contributed to the overall success of the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater of World War II cannot be overstated.

At the time of his discharge Gunner’s Mate Albert Cabana was eligible to wear the American Theater Ribbon with three bronze battle stars, the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with three service stars, the Navy Good Conduct Award, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one service ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, and his Submarine Combat Patrol Pin with one service star on his uniform.

Our condolences are sent to the entire family. We purchased Mr. Cabana’s home he built on Vina several years ago. During the sale and beyond he was kind to us as we asked many questions. It was so evident that he took such good care of the home and loved it very much. We now call our home The Lyons’ Cabana.
Peace be with the family. Ann and Keith Lyons
Rest in peace Petty Officer Cabana.
