Donald B. Underhill


Donald B. Underhill, 83, of Plant City passed away on September 18, 2004 under the care of Hospice in Plant City, Florida. He was a decorated World War II veteran who served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps.

World War II

At the time of his honorable discharge Captain Underhill was eligible to wear the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the American Campaign Medal on his uniform. Captain Underhill was credited for completing 35 missions over Germany for a total of 275 combat hours and over 1200 total flying hours. 

Distinguished Flying Cross

During one of his many combat missions Captain Underhill’s successfully landed his B-17 that had been badly damaged because of German antiaircraft. As a result of Captain Underhill’s heroic actions he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroism. The Distinguished Flying Cross is Americas oldest medal given for military aviation for heroism or extraoidinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. 

Military Honors

Donald Underhill will be buried at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida with military honors.
