Covell, Jr., Vernon Edward 84, of Largo, FL, formerly of Grand Rapids and Muskegon, MI, died, Thursday, June 25, after a brief illness.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon E Covell, Sr. and Marian (Secord) Covell, brothers Jack Covell, David Covell, Patrick Covell, Dominic Covell, Jerome Covell, Mike Covell, sister Rosemary Covell, brother in law, Lyle (Rex) Dyer, and step-daughter, Sandra J Campbell-Theisen, whom he affectionately called Sunshine.
Vern is survived by his spouse Nancy Campbell, brothers John (Judy) Covell, Mary (Al) Hicks, Tony (Clara) Covell, in-laws Mary (Dave) Engstrom, Mickey (Sue) Dyer, Kathy Dyer, children, Joseph (Nancy) Covell, Tina (Kenneth) Groendyke, and Vincent Covell, step-children, John Campbell, Jr., Debbi Campbell, Kathy (Vince) Patterson, Joan Buckner, Will (James) Campbell and Michael Campbell, as well as a multitude of beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Vern was born in Muskegon, MI. At age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, where, as a Drill Instructor, he molded new recruits; and also served in the U.S. Air Force as a Staff Sergeant. He had a long career with Meijer Corp, retiring after 29 years.
Vern was an active participant in his local congregation serving as a lay reader, usher, & occasionally, crucifer. He enjoyed a variety of sports, participating in boxing in his younger years and golfing in the later years, and he enjoyed sports as a spectator. Vern was a die-hard Notre Dame and Minnesota Vikings fan, much to the chagrin of his family and friends (Go Blue!) In addition, Vern enjoyed camping, especially an evening camp fire, replete with s’mores or hobo pies. Always a snappy dresser, Vern loved to color coordinate his shirts, shorts, and shoes in vibrant and bold colors. He also cut quite a dashing figure in a tuxedo. Vern had a penchant for gold cross chains and bracelets, and diamond rings, choosing to wear many at the same time.
Vern was quite a card player and could often be found with a winning hand on Saturday afternoons. When Vern did come out ahead, which occurred frequently, he would always earmark the winnings for dinner out on the town with Silly (his spouse Nancy) Vern was known by many affectionate nicknames. He would refer to himself as “Ugly’ and Nancy as “Silly.” To some of his grandchildren he was known as “Grumpy” only because he never was grumpy. Later in life, many called him, “Mr. Adorable.” Vern always put others first. He cared deeply for his family and friends. He treated everyone with respect. He was an old school gentleman.
Vern exhibited a passion for living life to the fullest, whether it be dancing with his spouse, Nancy, bowling, golfing, or volunteering as part of the honor guard at his local VFW and American Legion Posts.
Vern was a member in good standing at the American Legion Post #252, a life time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9272, member of the Loyal Order of Moose and Fraternal Order of the Knights of Columbus.
A service of Christian burial is planned for Tuesday, June 30th, 11:00 am, at Veterans Funeral Care, veteransfuneralcare.com, 830 N Belcher Rd, Clearwater, the Reverend Becky Robbins-Penniman, celebrant. A Memorial Service and interment are to be conducted at Bay Pines National Cemetery at a later date, with Full Military Honors. Cremation has taken place.

So sorry to hear of Vern’s passing. I lost my Joe in March. They both were respected Veterans who were loved by many.
