LCpl Wayne Nundy -USMC-Vietnam War Veteran


Wayne Nundy, 77 of Clearwater, Florida passed away at his residence on July 18, 2023, under the care of Hospice and with his loving family at his bedside. He was born on May 12, 1946 to Richard and Hazel (Hurst) Nundy in Tampa, Florida. He was a Vietnam War Era veteran and was discharged on March 1, 1968 in Marine Corps Base 29 Palms, California.  During his 4 year military career, Wayne was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal and an Armed Forces Expeditionary Metal.  He was also qualified as a-Marksman – Rifle; Marksman – Pistol; and qualified as a crewmember of the 105mm Howitzer Cannon. His services are 3:00 PM, Saturday, August 5, 2023 at Veterans Funeral Care with Pastor Brent Stancil and the United States Marine Corps and Det. 54, Marine Corps League, to officiate.  The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM until service time.

Wayne was life long resident of Tampa Bay. He attended DeSoto Elementary, Phillip Shore Jr. High School, and Jefferson High School.  He received an A.A. Degree from St. Petersburg Jr. College, a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of South Florida and two Master’s Degrees from the University of North Florida.  He served in the Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968, the inactive reserves from 1968 to 1970 and the active reserves from 1975 to 1977.  He was a Veteran of the Dominican Republic Intervention and the Vietnam War. He taught social studies at Orange Park High School from 1972 to 1977.  During this time he also was a member of the USMCR “Iron Gators” of Jacksonville, Florida. He taught and coached softball at Leto High School in Tampa from 1978 to 1984.  During this time his team won 3 districts; 2 regional; 2 sections and 2 conference championships ending with a final 4 appearance in 1983 and a State Championship in 1984. In 1984, he was chosen by the Florida Coaches Association as Coach of the Year.

He was a teacher, athletic director, and assistant principal at Lakewood high school in St. Petersburg from 1984 to 1990. He was the athletic director and assistant principal at Dixie Hollins high school in St. Petersburg from 1990 to 1993. He served as assistant principal at Gibbs high from 1993 to 1998. He retired in 1998 but returned to teach social studies at Gibbs high school from 1995 to 2005 at which time he retired again.

Wayne loved Gator football and attended all home games since 1994. He also loved shooting rifles and pistols and was a member of the Wyoming Antelope Club. He also was a member of the Marine Heritage Foundation, The Marine Corps Association, The Marine Corps League, and the NRA. He donated annually to the USO, Disabled Veterans , Florida Sherriff’s Ranch, CASA of St. Petersburg, The Largo Armed Forces Museum, Goodwill, AMVETS and Hospice of the Suncoast.
