John Wesley Powell


John Wesley Powell, fondly known as “Mailman,” passed away peacefully at his home in St. Petersburg, Florida, on May 3, 2024, at the age of 73. He was born on April 22, 1951, in Montgomery, Alabama, to Fred Powell, Sr. and Carrie (Perkins) Powell, with his stepmother Senolia Dillard joining the family.

John’s journey through life was marked by resilience and dedication. Despite completing only three years of high school at Miami Edison, he embarked on a remarkable path of service and learning. In 1970, during the Vietnam era, John enlisted in the Air Force, where he served as a paratrooper. His commitment to his country was unwavering.

In December, John celebrated a decade of marriage with his beloved wife, Malicia (Bell) Powell. Their union was a source of strength and joy for both of them. Throughout his life, John wore many hats with pride and distinction. He served as a letter carrier for the USPS, a role that brought him into contact with countless people whom he served with kindness and efficiency. As a 100% disabled veteran, he continued to demonstrate his dedication to service. Beyond his professional roles, John was a certified personal trainer and a trained paralegal, showcasing his diverse skills and interests.

“Mailman” was not just a title; it was a reflection of John’s character. He was known for his clever wit, his infectious humor, and his tender sensitivity. Above all, he possessed a heart of gold that touched the lives of all who knew him.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Powell Sr. and Carrie Powell, as well as his stepmother Senolia Powell. He was also preceded by his brothers Fred Powell Jr. and Joseph Powell, and sisters Annie Jean Powell and Mary Lee Powell Dottie.

He is survived by his loving wife, Malicia, and his children Shakenda Simmons, Darnell Wesley (Wendy) Powell, Antwan VanDyke, Alvin Darnell Powell, Leticia (Dekai Rohlsen) Powell, Alvis Powell, Andrea (Malcolm) Green and Jamie Perkins. His memory will also be cherished by his siblings Rosa Lee Powell Bottoms, Benny James Powell, Dorothy Chayter, Neubretta Powell McCall and Carrel Powell. John leaves behind a legacy of love and family, including 18 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who mourn his loss.

In addition to his professional pursuits and family life, John had a passion for languages and sports. He was fluent in Spanish and embraced his love for racing, owning race cars and frequently attending racing events. His enthusiasm for life and his diverse interests enriched the lives of those around him and will be remembered with fondness.

John Wesley Powell, the “Mailman,” will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his warmth, his laughter, and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love and memories he created.
