Leslie Albert Cyrene (Les)


Les was born and raised in Randolph, Kansas. Les was raised through the difficult years of the “Dust Bowl Storms” of 1930’s. He enlisted into the United States Army, serving both active Army, California, and Kansas National Guards for over 37 years. He attained the rank of Sergeant Major retiring as Chief Warrant Officer. One of his first loves was driving trucks early on and completed this dream by driving an over the road truck for two years, preceding his full retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 28 plus years, Audrey Cyrene. Surviving children include Donald Cyrene (Margit), Cheryl Tillinghast (Mark) and Laurel Cyrene (Steve). He leaves behind three step children, Kathy Miller (Tony deceased), Tim Bumbarger (Mary Beth ) and Karen Chauvin (Robert). Numerous grandchildren an great grandchildren remain. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorna Rice Cyrene and his father, Albert Cyrene. His sisters, Mildred Young and Gladys Lindquist also preceded him. Also, preceded in death were three wives; Annarose Cyrene, Belva Joyce Cyrene and Sue Foster Cyrene.

He enjoyed many years of not only serving in the military but photography. Audrey and Les enjoyed many quality years together with abundant travels as well as sharing in may activities with family, including quality fellowship with many friends and faith-based activities. They had both participated in mission trips prior to their marriage. Les was an avid bicyclist, a sport that he began in his 45th year which included several distance trips including a 1600 mile trip in central Europe at age 62. He biked across Kansas 527 miles in 7 days when he was 66 and biked 76 miles on the Pinellas Trail for his 75th birthday.

He was also enthusiastic about his every other day workouts at the gym and continued his workout and bicycling until his 90th year. He was quick to encourage others to never stop maintaining physical fitness at the highest level possible. He was always eager to express how blessed he was to enjoy a rich and satisfying Christian life. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him (March 13, 1929-December 7, 2024)

Memorial service is pending at present time, date to be determined later. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to Suncoast Cathedral Church, 2300 62nd Ave North, St. Petersburg, Florida 33702
