James W. Herren, Jr.

Version 1.0.0

James W. Herren, Jr., 79, of Sunset Beach, Florida passed away July 28, 2025, from a degenerative neuromuscular disorder. He is predeceased by his parents Gwen Godwin Warren and James W. Herren. The family appreciates the caring grace of the medical and hospice-care professionals at Bay Pines VA hospital in St. Petersburg.

A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Jim led reconnaissance missions for a small team on the border of Vietnam and Cambodia. During a firefight, two of his men died at his side, victims of the same round that injured Jim. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his actions that day—the day that changed the trajectory of Jim’s life forever.

Back stateside, Jim earned a degree in Criminal Justice from USF. He became a boat builder, worked in marine repair, then became a letter carrier in St. Pete. Jim was a private pilot, a lifelong seeker of knowledge, and a sure guide to the young woman he married.

Jim Herren’s spirit enhanced the world, and his cast-iron strength in the face of tragedy was an honor to witness. He is survived by his sisters Sandra Howell and Cheryl Herren, his former spouse Juli Herren, and an understandably expansive network of loving friends at the beach and beyond.

A military honors service will be held at Bay Pines National Cemetery, followed by a memorial gathering. Contact Veterans Funeral Care for details at (727) 524-9202.
