Robert George Zakel, 77, of Clearwater, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on November 16th, 2025, in Countryside, after a courageous and extended battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Born on March 17th, 1948, in Rockville Centre, New York, Robert was the son of the late George Edwin Zakel and Hazel Florence Gast. His life was shaped by service, dedication, and an unwavering devotion to family. On July 21st, 1972, he married the love of his life, Ana Cecilia Arauz, at the United States District Court for the District of the Canal Zone Balboa Division. Together they shared 53 years of partnership, adventure, and deep, enduring love.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Ana Cecilia; his children, Eileen (Carl) Lewandowski and Robert (Christine) Zakel; and his cherished grandchildren, Shealyn, Jeremiah, and Dylan Lewandowski. He is also remembered fondly by many extended family members who were blessed by his steady presence, quick wit, and warm affection. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Hazel Zakel.
After being honorably discharged from the United States Air Force, Robert built a long and respected career as comptroller at Electro Tape, where he worked diligently until his retirement in Clearwater Florida. Known for his calm demeanor, sharp intellect, and extraordinary work ethic, he earned the admiration of colleagues and friends alike.
A man of many interests, Robert lived a life enriched by curiosity and discipline. An avid runner, he was a proud member of Tampa Bay Running Inc., participating enthusiastically in numerous local races, including the local favorite, Gasparilla race. He was also a devoted coin collector, music enthusiast, woodworker, history buff, and loyal Tampa Bay sports fan. His love for investing and reading showcased his analytical mind and lifelong thirst for learning.
Throughout his life, Robert called many places home—Panama, Maine, New York, New Jersey, and ultimately Florida—each shaping the thoughtful, grounded, and resilient man he became.
Among his proudest accomplishments were being a loving father and devoted husband, proudly serving his country, and setting records as a standout member of the New York Cross Country team. His family will forever remember him as calm under pressure, incredibly determined, impeccably organized, strong-willed, deeply loyal, and exceptionally intelligent. To know him was to trust him; to love him was effortless.
Visitation will be held on November 21st at 1:00 PM at Veterans Funeral Care, 830 North Belcher Road, Clearwater, FL 33765, followed by funeral services at 2:00 PM at the same location.
