Charles John “Charlie” Stoneback

Charles John “Charlie” Stoneback, age 75, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away on April 4, 2026, at the Bay Pines VA Hospital Hospice Center, following a four-month battle with lung cancer.

Charlie was born on August 1, 1950, in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, the son of the late John Stoneback and Margaret (Benninger) Stoneback Bretsius.

On June 5, 1974, he married Debra Darling, and together they shared 36 years of marriage until her passing in 2010.

Charlie proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he worked as a newspaper delivery man and later as a pizza delivery driver in St. Petersburg, Florida.

He is survived by his sister, Carla Snyder and her husband Glenn of Freemansburg, Pennsylvania; his stepsister, Cheryl Stoneback Urban-McCabe; his aunt, Marie Frankenfield of Quakertown, Pennsylvania; his nieces Wendy, Rachel, and Rebecca; his nephew Jonathan; and many cousins including Molly, April, Lisa, Cas, Bob, Brian, Elaine, Jerry, Debbie, Karen, and Lori, along with their families.

In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Debra (Darling) Stoneback.

Charlie was known for his friendly nature and great sense of humor. He loved telling jokes and made many friends throughout his life, especially during his later years in assisted living communities. He enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including bowling in league competitions, playing chess, and following sports—especially baseball, football, ice hockey, and racing.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the VA team of MHICM workers, as well as the nurses, doctors, and hospice staff who provided compassionate care. Special thanks are also given to Steve Starr and Mary Haugabook for their support and kindness.

Charlie will be placed to rest at Bay Pines VA National Cemetery.
