Gen. Carl E. Mundy, Jr., 78, retired 30th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from July 1, 1991 until his retirement on June 30, 1995, died April 2, 2014. From 1996 to 2000 he served as President and CEO of the USO. Gen. Mundy is the Chairman of the Marine Corps University Foundation. He also served on a number of corporate boards.

 

Gene Overstreet served Gen. Mundy as the 12th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps during his term as Commandant.  Sergeant major Overstreet said “he was one of the finest men I ever knew.”

 

Gen. Mundy was born on July 16, 1935 in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama. At age 18, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserve and enrolled in the PLC program in December 1953 while attending college serving in the 38th Special Infantry Company, Montgomery, Alabama and rising to the grade of Sergeant.  He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in June 1957, following graduation from Auburn University.  His later military education included the Command and General Staff College and the Naval War College.

 

General Mundy’s decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Valor device, Purple Heart, Navy Commendation Medal with a star & Valor device, Combat Action Ribbon, and many others.

 

General Mundy’s two sons followed him into the Marine Corps. His oldest son, Brig. Gen. Carl E. Mundy lll currently serves as commanding general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade in California, while Col. Timothy S. Mundy serves as chief of staff for Combat Development and Integration at Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, VA. He is also survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Gunter. Private Memorial services will be held at the Iwo Jima Memorial. He will be buried with his wife Linda Sloan Mundy in the family plot in Waynesville, NC.
