Eugene Leslie Taylor passed away on May 3, 2014 after long illness.
Gene was born in Tampa on March 13, 1924 and was raised in Tampa and Largo amongst a large, close-knit family. He graduated from Largo High School, where he played football for his beloved Packers. He had a football scholarship to the University of Florida, but WWII intervened. He eventually graduated from UF and taught science at Largo High School and Mount Vernon High School in Virginia. Gene left teaching to become a chemist for the government. After serving at various military bases, he retired as Chief Chemist at MacDill AFB. He enjoyed traveling, genealogy, history, reading and visiting his family.
Gene was preceded in death by his ex-wife and mother of his children, Darlene; his daughter, Susan Hamm; and his brother, Victor. He is survived by his wife, Mavis; his daughter, Brenda Jean (Bill) Sieffert; his son, Tom (Susan) Taylor; and his eight grandchildren: Debbie Steere, Vincent Rubio, Thomas Taylor, David Sieffert, Brandon Taylor, Amy Duffy, Adam Taylor and Cody Taylor. Gene is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.
The family wants to thank the wonderful care-givers at the James Haley VA Hospital and Aglay and her band of angels at Amalia Gardens.
There will be a graveside service with military honors at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 30, 2014 at the City of Largo Cemetery, 1232 Jasper Street East, Largo 33756.
