Harold Wayne Dew, LT.-US Navy-Retired-66, of Fleming Island, FL went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Saturday, October 11, 2008 ending his courageous battle with cancer at the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Hadlow Center. He was born August 26, 1942 in Jackson, Tennessee to the late Benjamin Franklin Dew and Ruby Viola Dew. Harold relocated his family to Jacksonville, FL in 1978 from many other duty stations while serving proudly in the Unites States Navy for 23 years. His military career started in 1958 enlisting as seaman recruit and ended with his retirement as Lieutenant with 21 honorable promotions including many achievements such as Navy Commendation Medal; Navy Achievement Medal; Navy Good Conduct Medal with 4 Awards; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Color with Palm; Navy "E" Medal and a Sea Service Deployment Medal. Mr. Dew then served as Deputy Director of MWR, Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, Georgia and retired after 20 years of civil service. Harold was a born-again Christian and member of First Coast Baptist Church, in Jacksonville, FL. A dedicated and loving Husband, Father and Grandfather, Harold’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Shelby J. Hinton-Dew; sons, Robert and his wife Diane, and Randy and his wife Suzanne; grandchildren, Adam, Alex and Danielle, all residents of Jacksonville, FL. Brothers, James Franklin Dew of Tucson, AZ., and J.B. Chandler, of Jackson, TN. Harold was also preceded in death by brothers James, Robert, Edward, and Gerald. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, October 17, 2008 at 9:00am followed with a full military honors funeral service at 10:00am, both at First Coast Baptist Church, 7587 Blanding Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32244. Our hearts and prayers are with each of you during this time. Harold not only was a great friend but we shared the same birthday. I will miss working with him at Kings Bay. May the good Lord wrap his loving arms around each of you and keep you close.
Harold will be truly missed by the McConnell Family, my daughter Angela and husband Dean Charpia, son Shawn, daughter Tiffany, and grand-daughter Brandi, all having worked with Harold through the MWR years. I started working with Harold in 1992, he was my leader, my mentor, a friend, and a wonderful and cheerful co-worker. On â??Liberty Callâ??, I will never forget our family outings to Langs Seafood in St Marys for â??Shwimpsâ??. You and your family have truly shed happiness upon our lives and we will never forget you. Shelby, you will always be in our thoughts and prayers. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dew family. We knew Harold for at least 15 years from working with MWR. Harold was always very honest and straightforward with me and I had a lot of respect for him. He always treated us like family and especially our daughters whom he treated like his own. He will be missed dearly. He was a good friend.

I am sorry to hear that Mr. Dew lost his fight to cancer. He helped me many a day when I was going trough my cancer with always a kind word or don’t give in and I would remember those words every time my cancer came back. God Bless him, and make room for me someday smile.
I will truely miss Mr. Dew he was an inspriation to me and my family. I know that he loved the Lord and in now celebrating with his love ones in heaven. My condolelnces to Ms. Shelby who I have had the great pleasure of knowing and whois a wonderful wife and mother. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. It was a pleasure working with Harold at SUBASE Kings Bay, Georgia. How wonderful it is to know we will all see him again in Heaven! I send my prayers that God will give his family strength and peace during their time of loss.
Mr. Dew was my supervisor at Kings Bay, but most of all he was my friend. I have missed him daily since his retirement from Kings Bay and prayed for him during his battle with cancer. He loved sharing his love of the Lord and his witness was a blessing to me. My prayers are with his family during this very difficult time.
Harold Dew was “one of a kind”….the absolutely BEST. This life as we know it lost a wonderful man. I wil always regret that I let distance restrict our communications as we both pursued our careers after a great relationship at NAS Cecil Field in the late 70. Harold was the most professional officer I ever met, period. Our heart and prayers go out to Harold’s family as I know he will be truely missed so very much.
I worked with Mr. Dew in Kings Bay for 10 years. What a wonderful inspiration he was to me. Whenever I thought about him, I always had a smile on my face. He was the most decent, loving, respected man I know. He loved his job, his family and most of all, the Lord and was never ashamed to admit it. God truly has a wonderful witness with Him now! My prayers are with his family during this very difficult and sad time. Even though you know he’s keeping watch over you now, it certainly is still such a loss here on earth. God Bless you!
I remember Harold from the “old days” at NAS Cecil Field in the mid-70’s. At that time I believe he was a Warrant Officer. Harold was always most professional and a truly caring individual. My wife, Cheryle, and I offer our thoughts and prayers for the entire Dew family.
