Kenneth N. Mayo, SFC – US Army – Retired. Funeral services are 2:30 PM, Friday, October 9, 2009 at the Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Avenue, Bushnell, FL 33513 with Minister Harold Frazier and the United States Army Military Honor Guard from Ft. Stewart, GA to officiate.
A native of Detroit, MI; Kenneth served proudly in the US Army for 22 distinguished years including a combat tour during the Vietnam War and retired as a Non-Commissioned Officer with the rank of Sergeant First Class. During Kenneth’s US Army service he earned many awards and decorations including the Good Conduct Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters. He performed duties as an instructor at the Army’s Nuclear, Biological and Chemical school and also served as a Food Service Sergeant.
Kenneth was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Tampa, Florida, and was a member of the Nehmiah Masonic Lodge #1 in Detroit, Michigan, where he also served as the Masonic State Grand Deputy. Kenneth enjoyed cooking for various Boy Scout Troops.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Steven Jackson and Louise Mayo and his son, Kenneth N. Mayo, Jr. He is survived by his loving family: his wife, Joyce of Tampa, FL; two sons; Cary Grant of Atlanta, GA; and Darren Grant of Tampa FL., and his wife Tashawn; two daughters; Cheryl Tyson of Tampa, FL; and Kathryn Fuller and her husband, Victor of Tampa, FL; his Step-Mom Edith Marie Jackson of Detroit, MI, a brother, William Mayo and his wife Dorothy of Mussel Sholes, AL; three sisters: Sharron Hawkins and her husband, Daniel of Detroit, MI; Stephanie Howard-Robinson and her husband, Howard of Detroit, MI and Arcena Bush and her husband, Jim of North Carolina; A great aunt, Ida Mayo, twelve grandchildren, one great grandchild, and a host of cousins, aunts and uncles.
Dear Joyce and Family;
We just wanted you to know that our love and prayers are with you at this most difficult time.
When we met you and Ken, it was if we had known you forever. It was so awesome to experience that kind of kindred spirit.
