Frank F. Smith, age 86, died December 31, 2009.
Frank was a former resident of Yorkshire, NY; Lexington, KY; and Venice, FL. He was the husband of Catherine Smith; the son of Frank and Eva Smith.
Frank was born in Hartford, CT and raised in the Bronx, NY. He enlisted in the Navy in December 1940 and was on the USS Whitney at Pearl Harbor during the attack on December 7, 1941. He served until 1946 and was in Tokyo Bay aboard the USS Chicago for the Japanese surrender. In 1951 he moved to Yorkshire, NY and opened a service station with his father-in-law and sold that business in 1973. He worked for the State of New York Department of Motor Vehicles until he retired in 1992. He was the Supervisor for the Town of Yorkshire for 20 years, a 30 year member of the Yorkshire Volunteer Fire Department, Toastmasters International, Arcade United Methodist Church and a life member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor’s Assn.
Besides his wife of 62 years, he leaves behind four children to honor his memory; Craig of Venice, FL; Claudia (Jud) Payne of Depew, NY; Caren (Jaime) Dubay of Delevan, NY; Charles (Patsy) of Fayetteville, NC; five grandchildren; a nephew, William (Margo) Schneeloch of Venice, FL; and a niece, Lynn (Xavier) Eboli of Venice, FL.
A graveside service will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery on April 30, 2010 at 2 p.m. where his ashes will be interred along with fellow veterans who preceded him.

It is hard to put into words the depth of my love for you and the ache in my heart, now that you are gone. I am so proud to be your daughter. You touched so many people with your kind heart and gentle ways. I will honor you by trying to live my life as you did yours. As a World War II veteran and Pearl Harbor Survivor, you have earned the right to be buried in Arlington Cemetary. When you are laid to rest, I will be there to honor you.

There was never a time that your dad didn’t have that devilish grin on his face, or a story to tell! He and mom were like pups, and I know mom will miss him dearly. I am grateful to have had his association through our friendship, and know that you and the family will miss him as well. With time, the pain of his passing will lessen, but his legacy and kindness will never be forgotten ! Please know that Sandy and I are only a phone call away, and are here for you! God bless !
