George F. Abel Sr., 88, CPL., USMC, World War II Veteran of St Petersburg, FL and New Haven, CT died at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center, Bay Pines, FL from natural causes. His memorial military services are 12:45 PM, Monday, March 29, 2010 at the Bay Pines VA National Cemetery, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., Bay Pines, FL 33762 with Father Tom Dieter and VFW Post 9272, to officiate.
Cpl. Abel was born in New Haven, CT and is preceded in death by his wife, Marie and retired as an inspector/machinist in the manufacturing field. Cpl. Abel was a member of the Annex Club; a member of the VFW, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Past Vice President of the Iwo Jima Survivors’ Association and attended St Bernadette Catholic Church. During World War II, George served in the United States Marine Corps and was awarded a Silver Star; a Purple Heart; Presidential Unit Citation with 0ne (1) Star; Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon with Three (3) Stars; American Area Ribbon; World War II Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.
George is preceded in death by his parents, Irving and Margaret Abel; five brothers, Walter, Irvin, Albert, and Edward Abel and Joseph Anderson; and three sisters, Marie Beauvais, Dorothy Landino, and Lorraine Nagretti. Survivors include his sons; George F. Abel Jr. and his wife, Louise of St. Petersburg, FL and David Abel of North Branford, CT; his brothers; Robert Abel and his wife, Ann of Guilfort, CT; Eugene Abel and Dolores of Edina, Minnesota; James Abel and his wife, Phyllis of North Branford, CT and sister in law, Ellie Anderson of Wolcott, CT; his four grandchildren, Jeremy, Keith, Stacy, and Ashley Abel and five great grandchildren; Dakota, Alyssa, Brianna, Brian and Sarah Abel.
His graveside burial services are 11:00 AM, April 9, 2010 at the All Saints Cemetery, 700 Middletown Avenue, North Haven, CT 06473 with the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard.
