SHEFFIELD, Mildred V.H. 94, Palm Harbor, passed away May 14, 2010, under the care of Suncoast Hospice.
Born in Cleveland, OH, she had lived in Florida for 30 years, retiring to the Destin area in 1980, from Nashua, NH, where she had managed a college bookstore in the 1970’s. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English in 1937, from Western Reserve University’s Flora Stone Mather College and worked for a Cleveland advertising agency after graduation. She was a WWII veteran of the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) having entered the first officer candidate training class in 1942. She earned the rank of Captain. She was a lifelong member of the PEO Sisterhood. A devoted mother and wife and a lover of literature, learning, music, art and nature, Mildred shared her appreciation of those interests with the people around her and inspired them through her generous spirit and integrity. She was loved by all who were fortunate to know her.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy, Palm Harbor, FL; sons, William, Choctaw Beach, FL and Robert, Santa Fe, NM; sisters, Reva Smith and Margaret Stearns; cousin, John Van Horn; 4 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry; daughter, Pamela; & brother, Irving.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Suncoast Hospice or PEO Sisterhood.
