John S. Hayes, Sr., 92, of Largo, FL died October 27, 2010 at Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, the day after he celebrated his 70th wedding anniversary.
He moved to Largo from his native Hellertown, PA in 1978 where he retired from Bethlehem Steel after 38 years of service. He was a volunteer fireman at Dewey Fire Company in Hellertown and served as Chief and Assistant Chief. He was a member of the Lehigh Valley Revolver League, a 20 year member of the Czechoslovak Culture Center in Gulfport, FL and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Seminole, FL. He served in the US Cavalry Battery "D" 68th F.A. from 1935-1938 earning the rank of Private First Class. He was a sharpshooter and enjoyed fishing and hunting, traveling and woodworking.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Slavo and Anna; 5 sisters: Rose, Mary, Anna, Frances and Celia; 3 brothers, Martin, Victor and Andy. Survivors include his wife, Margaret “Maggie”; a daughter, Beverly Schuck of Kerrville, TX; a son, John Jr. of Kingsport, TN; a brother, Thomas of Secane, PA; 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
A Mass for the Repose of his Soul will be celebrated at 10:30AM on Tues., November 9, 2010 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 11565 66th Avenue, Seminole, Father Gordon as Celebrant, with Graveside services and Military Honors by American Legion Post #273 following at Bay Pines National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Bay Pines Hospice Care, #GPF1086, PO BOX 5005, Bay Pines, FL 33744.

Dear Aunt Margaret, Beverly, John and families,
We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers as you make your last loving arrangements for Uncle John. You have shared his life memories with us in our visits and we will treasure them as I know you will too. Take care, Rodger, Margie and the girls.
Pop you gave us many memories and laughs over the years. We will miss those times and you! Love you always.
