Alfred R. Korach November 17, 1920 through February 3, 201.  Born to Joseph and Bertha Berger Korach at St. Anne’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.  Alfred showed talent in music at a very early age. After returning to Cleveland from a European trip with his mother and older brother, he asked his mother for a violin.

 

He was five-years-old. He attended Cleveland Heights Grammar and High School. He graduated from Case Western Reserve School of Engineering with his bachelor of science degree. He then was accepted at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis,Maryland, graduating ninth in his class, with the rank of Lieutenant.  After serving his country during World War II, he returned to Clevelandand to Case Western Reserve University, graduating with a Master’s of Engineering degree, specializing in mechanical engineering. He was a life associate member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers International, receiving recognition for 50 years of service. It was at this university that hemet his future wife, Eileen Fusek, who had just enrolled in her freshmanyear.  Quoting from The Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper, “Chamber music is their common interest.”

 

Alfred, at 27, was the youngest member of the string quartet and an accomplished musician. Members of the group had professionally played with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and theCleveland Symphony Orchestra during the 1941-1945 seasons. He was the youngest member of the group. His musical career was interrupted by his company’s move from Cleveland to Tampa, Florida. He was the first vice-president of the Standard Cigar Company for over 40 years before his retirement.

 

He was a charter member of Krewe of Venus. He was a kind and gentle soul.

 

He is survived by his wife Eileen and daughter Kandy.

 

Graveside services are  10:30 AM, Friday Morning, February 11, 2011 at Florida National Cemetery, 6502  SW 102nd Avenue, Bushnell, Florida 33513 with Marion County Military Honor Guard, to officate.
