Darrell DeWitt Mayes, a beloved figure whose life was a testament to dedication, love, and faith, passed away on May 29, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on July 8, 1941, Darrell was the son of Hoyt and Lecy Smith Mayes, and he spent his formative years on a humble farm in the rural logging community of Sikes, Louisiana. It was there amidst the serene countryside that Darrell cultivated his strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to family.
Darrell’s journey of academic and personal growth led him to Winnfield High School, where he excelled academically and athletically, graduating with honors. His prowess on the football field earned him a coveted scholarship to Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. At Northwestern, Darrell not only thrived in his studies, earning a degree in Math and Science Education, but he also found the love of his life, Connie Pence. Their union in 1963 marked the beginning of a remarkable 61-year journey together, filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
As a devoted husband and father, Darrell’s greatest joy was found in his role as a parent to his four boys: Bo, Jimmy, Donald, and Matthew. His unwavering support and guidance shaped the lives of his children, instilling in them the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion.
Professionally, Darrell dedicated himself to the construction and sales industries, where his diligence and integrity earned him the respect of colleagues and clients alike. Later in life, he transitioned to a role at Indian Rocks Christian School, where he retired after years of dedicated service. It was during this time that Darrell found another calling – serving families in their time of need through the Memorial Ministry at Indian Rocks Baptist Church. His compassionate nature and comforting presence provided solace to countless individuals during their most challenging moments.
Throughout his life’s journey, Darrell’s unwavering faith in the Lord served as a guiding light. He walked each step of his path with humility and obedience, trusting in God’s plan for him and his family.
In addition to his loving wife, Connie, and their children, Darrell is survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who will continue to cherish his memory and honor his legacy. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Laverne Rothemell, and an infant sister.
Darrell DeWitt Mayes will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements but also for the kindness, generosity, and love that he shared with all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may have departed this earthly realm, his spirit will live on eternally in the hearts of those who loved him.
A celebration of life will be held in his honor on Saturday, June 8th, 2024 at Indian Rocks Baptist Church 12685 Ulmerton Rd, Largo, FL 33774 with a visitation at 10:00 AM, service at 11:00 AM, and interment to follow.
Dear cousin, I will always remember you as funny, loving and Faith-filled. You stood by our family’s side through many crises, and I am forever grateful.
Although our paths rarely crossed, I remember you dear cousin as a wonderful individual who was kind, friendly, and always had a winning smile, and compassionate heart. My husband and I extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to your wonderful wife Connie, your sons, grandchildren, and all the members of your family.
Respectfully,

We never know when a “last” will be. I got a last hug from Daryl at the memorial service at Indian Rocks just a few days ago. His kind compassionate spirit was a perfect fit for his condolence ministry. He will be missed by so many. To his family “I’m so sorry for your loss here on earth, but a grand reunion day is coming.”
Connie, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Your kindness when I first came to bible study will never be forgotten. I didn’t know your husband except through the stories you told, but your love for him was always so present. Love and prayers
Darrell was a senior and I a freshman starter on the Winnfield High football team in 1958. He held the respect of every man on the team. I salute you, my friend!
Connie and family, Even though I didn’t know Darrell personally I know he had a great influence on his wife and family. Connie, how wonderful to know where your dear husband is. I loved the years I volunteered in your class at Indian Rocks and to have known Don and April was a blessing! Ray and I will pray for all your family that God will be with each one as they seek his comfort and strength. Marjorie and Ray Bradshaw
Connie, Even though I didn’t know Darrell very well know he loved his wife and family. I really enjoyed the times I volunteered with Connie at the IRCS. We both knew Don and April. We saw Derrell as he worked at the school and church. We want you to know we are praying for God’s comfort and strength at this and in the days ahead. Ray and Marjorie Bradshaw
Darrell was in the high school graduating class one year after me. We were on the Tiger football team together. Darrell led our team to the district championship and was named to the All State team that year. Darrell, like me, was brought up in the more rural parts of Winn Parish (he in Sikes, me in Dodson). He was the runner up for most handsome in 1958. You may enjoy seeing what life was like in Winnfield during those years. Darrel is pictured at the 7 minute mark. Please accept my condolence on your lost. He will certainly be missed.

Darrell was a math student teacher at Natchitoches High School in 1964. He was a very good teacher. My twin brother, Ronald & I were in his class.
Sorry to hear of his passing….
We used to kid him about his beautiful girlfriend, who became his wife. Condolences to Connie and family.
