Darrell Mayes

Darrell DeWitt Mayes, a beloved figure whose life was a testament to dedication, love, and faith, passed away on May 29, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on July 8, 1941, Darrell was the son of Hoyt and Lecy Smith Mayes, and he spent his formative years on a humble farm in the rural logging community of Sikes, Louisiana. It was there amidst the serene countryside that Darrell cultivated his strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to family.

Darrell’s journey of academic and personal growth led him to Winnfield High School, where he excelled academically and athletically, graduating with honors. His prowess on the football field earned him a coveted scholarship to Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. At Northwestern, Darrell not only thrived in his studies, earning a degree in Math and Science Education, but he also found the love of his life, Connie Pence. Their union in 1963 marked the beginning of a remarkable 61-year journey together, filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

As a devoted husband and father, Darrell’s greatest joy was found in his role as a parent to his four boys: Bo, Jimmy, Donald, and Matthew. His unwavering support and guidance shaped the lives of his children, instilling in them the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion.

Professionally, Darrell dedicated himself to the construction and sales industries, where his diligence and integrity earned him the respect of colleagues and clients alike. Later in life, he transitioned to a role at Indian Rocks Christian School, where he retired after years of dedicated service. It was during this time that Darrell found another calling – serving families in their time of need through the Memorial Ministry at Indian Rocks Baptist Church. His compassionate nature and comforting presence provided solace to countless individuals during their most challenging moments.

Throughout his life’s journey, Darrell’s unwavering faith in the Lord served as a guiding light. He walked each step of his path with humility and obedience, trusting in God’s plan for him and his family.

In addition to his loving wife, Connie, and their children, Darrell is survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who will continue to cherish his memory and honor his legacy. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Laverne Rothemell, and an infant sister.

Darrell DeWitt Mayes will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements but also for the kindness, generosity, and love that he shared with all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may have departed this earthly realm, his spirit will live on eternally in the hearts of those who loved him.
