Gary Alan Benson


Gary Alan Benson, age 66, of Dunedin, FL, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2024 under the care of hospice in Clearwater, FL, after a 13 month courageous battle with cancer. Born on
July 24, 1958 in Eau Claire, WI, he was the son of Juel and Althyne Benson. Following graduation from Richfield High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1976, achieving the rank of Sergeant in only 3 years. His dedication and commitment earned him meritorious promotions to Private First Class, Corporal and Sergeant. His decorations include Rifle Expert, 2 Meritorious Masts and a Good Conduct Medal for his exceptional performance and leadership.

After his honorable discharge, he returned to Minnesota where he lived in Apple Valley and later Coon Rapids. Gary was employed by Rapit Printing where he worked for 44 years until his retirement in July of 2023. He then moved to Dunedin, FL where he could be close to his sisters. Gary will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, commitment to excellence, and willingness to help others. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication and love that will be cherished by all who knew him.

Gary is survived by his loving family, brother Steven Benson and his wife Rebecca, sisters Karen Develle and Linda Williams, 5 nephews, 3 nieces and 2 grand nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and older brother Kim Benson. Gary will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends and co-workers, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Gary will be interred with Marine Corps Honors at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery on September 27, 2024 at 10:30 (arrival to cemetery 10:15). A Celebration of Life and luncheon will follow at the VFW Post 1296, 311 W.84th St. in Bloomington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given at the Celebration or sent directly to the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to (Animals), a no kill non-profit animal welfare agency and FOR-ALL animal shelter in Clearwater, Florida, where we sadly had to give his 2 beloved cats, Hunter and Moe for adoption. www.spcatampabay.org
