Colonel Norman H Golden passed away at The Oaks of Clearwater on December 3rd, 2010. Born to Rose and Harold Golden in Toledo, Ohio on April 14, 1918, he was the oldest of three brothers. Inspired by his childhood hero, Charles Lindberg, he dreamed of becoming a pilot. In July, 1940, he realized his dream when he joined the United States Marine Corps. He served as a Commander Pilot in the Pacific campaign of World War II for which he was highly decorated, including receipt of the Distinguished Flying Cross. He continued to serve in the Reserves during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During this time he earned his degree in engineering from Purdue University and began his life long career as an aeronautical engineer. His initial employment was as a pilot for Pan American Airways. Later, as an Aeronautical Engineer, among his many accomplishments include working in research and development to modernize the Grumman fire-fighting water bomber Albatross while with Resorts International. He later worked with Chalmers Goodland, President of The Burnelli Company, Inc., to develop the Burnelli Lifting Body Aircraft.

Colonel Golden married Peggy Meagher of Louisville, Kentucky on January 23, 1942. Following World War II, they moved to Miami, Florida where they raised their two daughters, Judith and Peggy Lee, and resided until 1989. Upon his retirement, Colonel and Mrs. Golden moved to Palm City, Florida and resided until 2008 when they moved to The Oaks of Clearwater to be close to family.

His many loves in life included his family, flying, the U.S. Marine Corps, travel, playing golf and tennis, and football.

He is predeceased by his two brothers, Robert and Edward. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Peggy, who was at his side when he passed; his two daughters, Judith and Peggy Lee; son-in-law, John Powers; two grandsons, Michael Shannon and Kevin Glenn; and three great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Keaton, and Evan.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations are made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation.

Colonel Goldens' service is 2:30 PM, Friday afternoon, December 10, 2001 at Florida National Cemetery, 6502  SW  102nd Avenue, Bushnell, Florida  33513 with the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard from  USMC Air Station, Jacksonville, NC and Father Byron Otradovec, to offiiate. Please send all floral arrangements directly to the cemetery.
