Alan Jay Fisher, 83, of Huntsville, passed away peacefully on Thursday.
He was born to parents Charles and Julia Fisher in Missouri. Mr. Fisher was a graduate of The University of Michigan and served in the U.S. Navy. As an electrical engineer, Mr. Fisher developed some of the early NASA communication systems. He served under Dr. Wernher von Braun at Marshall Space Flight Center during the infancy of the nation’s space program. In later years, he was a charter member of the team that started SCI. Mr Fisher had several inventions including one of the first magnetic stripe card readers and a thermal air snooper device still used today by hang gliders.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Jeanne Powell Fisher; and children, Holly Fisher McGinness of Huntsville, Jeff Fisher of Huntsville, and Wayne Fisher of Dallas, TX; also his grandchildren Cliff McGinness, Julie McGinnness Pierce, Rob Fisher, Rachel Fisher, Troy Fisher all of Huntsville and Charlie McGinness of Chattanooga.
A Memorial service will be held Sunday at 3:30pm at First United Methodist Church Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to First United Methodist Church, 120 Greene St., Huntsville, AL 35801.
