Barbara Hodges Shriner
Barbara Shriner (July 22, 1922-January 1, 2010) One of the world’s most wonderful moms passed away peacefully on January 1, 2010 at her son’s home in Lithia, FL. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, cook, and seamstress to name just a few of her amazing attributes. She was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania to Edith and George Hodges. Edith was a lifelong homemaker and George had a distinguished career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and was buried with full military honors as a Colonel upon his passing in 1940.
Barbara grew up with her sister Martha Allison and her cousin Patsy who were inseparable during their childhood.  Martha passed away in 1998 in Scottdale, PA and Patsy is a longtime resident of Lakeland, FL. Barbara married Jack Shriner in 1943 and they remained happily married for 59 years until his passing in October 2001. Barbara kept the family together through good times and bad with her strength, positive attitude and resiliency. Barbara, affectionately known as “MommaBarb” lived in Western and Eastern Pennsylvania, Kansas City, Chicago, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Jackson, TN, Columbus Ohio and Raleigh, NC before settling down in Brandon/Valrico, FL in 1976. She and Jack retired and lived in Featherock Senior Living Community since the early 1980’s. Barbara was an avid bridge player and a member of both the Brandon Elks and Moose Lodge for many of those years. She owned and loved several dogs over the years but none more so than her beloved Boston Terrier Maggie who she adopted from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay in March of 2004. Over the past five years she and Maggie were inseparable and happiest when they were in other’s presence.
She will be greatly missed by her daughter Martha Blanton, of Birmingham, Alabama, and son James Shriner and Karen Cassels of Lithia Florida. She was also a proud grandparent of five; Michael Blanton, Heidi Loyacano and Jennifer, Jill and Jonathan Shriner.  In addition, she was full of pride to be a Great-Grandmother to Benjamin and Grace Blanton.
Barbara’s Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at 121 N. Carver Ave. in Brandon, FL on Saturday, January 9th. Visitation will be from 1pm-3pm followed by a Memorial celebration. The internment will be a private family ceremony at a later date. She led a wonderful Christian life and was loved by many and will be sorely missed by all those that knew her. The is a reception for friends and family following the services in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, 3607 North Armenia Avenue, Tampa, FL 33607 in the Memory of Barbara Grace Shriner.
