Final Patrol
I have one consolation that lives with me today.
That God is near to them, in his own special way.
So God in all Your mercy, keep near Thyself the soul,
Of every Submariner, still on his final patrol.
Lord, this departed shipmate with Dolphins on his chest
is part of an outfit known as the best.
Make him welcome and take him by the hand.
You’ll find without a doubt he was the best in all the land.
So, heavenly Father add his name to the roll
of our departed shipmates still on patrol.
Let them know that we who survive
will always keep their memories alive.
Sailor, rest your oar.

Chester Herbert Duve Sr. is a fine man. He will be missed greatly. Our loss is indeed heavens gain. He gave his family the extra time needed to prepare for his passing. During the week we all spent with Chester and Catherine at the Acosta-Rua Hospice Center he was with us. We could feel his presence and he acknowleged the voices of his loved ones as they came to visit with him. It was an extraordinary time of family, caring and loving and we all were blessed and made richer because of it. We shared every meal together, we talked about everything, we slept in the same room. We wanted Chester to know his family was there for him as he has always been there for us. We were glad to be there for him. It was an honor. The Monday before he passed the NAS JAX Navy Chaplain came to see Chester. Prayers were said and many truths were spoken about the man and his life. No stronger testament can be said of how a man lived than how he is remembered by those closest to him when he is called away. The passing of a loved one is never easy but we know he is in heaven with Jesus and no longer struggling with the limitations of his mortal body.
To the Duve Family:
I was deeply sadden to read about Mr. Duve’s passing and want you to know that I think about all of you all the time. After Dale’s passing, I know we kinda lost touch of each other but want you to know I always thought about our times together. Mr. Duve was a kind, caring, and gentle person who always brought a smile to me. I know he is in heaven with Dale my friend who was like a little brother to me watching over all of us and awaiting our arrival. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
He was a wonderful man. I’m very glad that I had the chance to meet him. I’ll miss him.
Chester I am really going to miss you as we spent many years working together on the Treadfin ss410. Now you are in a better place with God where you will not hurt anymore. When I get my orders I will see you again and we will enjoy talking about old times. God Bless your Family and take care of them.
On Monday, January the 7th, I was privledged to be with Chester and then pray with him and his family. Catherine, you and Chester did it right, not only as a husband and wife, but as a mom and dad too! That was clearly evident to me as I walked into the room filled with loved and bathed in God’s peace. Family seperation during Chester’s years at sea was so much more intense than even Sailors like me with 30 plus years ever endured. My prayer for each of you is not only that God will continue to be your peace, but that you’ll reflect on why you are so close as a family and recognize that it is because you’ve been shown that relationships are more important than any”thing” and truly worth the investment! Thank you for blessing my life.
Shalom
I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Chet for several years. He was a very fine man who loved God, Family and Life.I will never forget him.
I was sorry to hear about this. Mr Duve` was one of the greatest men I ever got to meet. He always tried hard to steer us kids out of trouble when we were younger. My heart goes out to the Duve` family.
