Frederic W. Slater Jr., US Navy-Korean War Veteran, 81, of Apollo Beach, Florida funeral service is 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Southern Funeral Care, 10510 Riverview Drive, Riverview, Florida. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until service time.
A native of New Milford, NJ and a local resident since 1985, when he moved here from Canton, MA. Frederic spent his life living in Waterburt and Middlebury, CT before moving here. Frederic was a retired sales/marketing manager for Northrop-Grumman Corporation, a protestant and a US Navy Veteran of the Korean War. Frederic never meet a stranger and he was known as a "Fix-it-Man" for freinds and neighbors who needed help.
Frederic is survived by his loving family: his wife of 47 years, Marion L. (Traudt) Slater of Apollo Beach, FL; his sons; David Slater and his wife, Christine of South Berwick, Maine and Bruce Slater of Watertown, CT; his daughters; Diane Shursen and her husband, Ron of Lakeville, MN; Linda Sadlon and her husband, Jon of Simsbury, CT and Cathy Slater of Naugatuck, CT; his grandchildren: Rebecca Manson and her husband, Joey; Peter Slater and his wife, Maire; Jennifer Elhorst and her husband, Ben; Chelsea Sadlon, Natalie Sadlon, Chelsea Slater, James Shursen and Hannah Shursen and his great grandchildren: Nisha Slater, Raelen Slater, Claire Manson, Max Manson, Hannah Elhorst and a grandchild that will be born in Febuary 2011.

My dear Marion,
How blessed you and Fred were to have spent almost half a century together, caring, sharing and loving each other each step you traveled on the road of life. You have served as a model for our future generations to follow.
You were fortunate to have recognized the great qualities in each other that would serve as a basis for happiness and joy and a lifetime of mutual respect.
Each opportunity I had to see you two, it brought such delight to me to watch you interact: each looking with puppy-eyes into the face of the other and exuding the care we human beings should use as a model.
Although our physical bodies may escape this difficult world, those that truly loved each other will continue on with the strength and fortitude that was nurtured over our time together.

To say that Uncle Freddie was unique is an understatement, but it is for anyone who never met him that i feel sorry for. I still have my smiles from my memories.

Fred was a very nice brother-in-law to Ginnie and Me and we will never forget the nice times we shared with him.
I remember when you told Mom and Dad about wanting to marry Fred. They told you they couldn’t understand why you would want to marry someone thirteen years older than you. Your response was something like this: “I love Fred and I would rather be married to him for twenty years than never have that opportunity.” Well, you more than succeeded. You enjoyed your marriage to Fred for forty-seven years. You were made for each other. Your mutual love and loyalty were evident by all that knew you.
Please remember the blessings of those forty seven years and know that all of your siblings are here for you and love you very much.

I am sad to hear of Freds passing. Although I have not seen Fred in many years I was a neihbor for 13 years on Sleepers Island and enjoyed the many conversations and wisdom of Fred.
