Gene Edward Barrs, 54, of Pinellas Park, FL, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at his home. He was born in Statesboro, GA and was a long-time Florida resident.
He served his country in the US Army and worked with St. Petersburg College as a Studio Technical Assistant. Gene was a former District 9 VFW Commander and Post 4364 Commander. He was a member of Cooties, AmVets, the Army/Navy Union and the Moose Lodge # 1145. He loved his family and friends. He was someone who loved to cook (enough to feed an army) and to help others.
A friend wrote, “… he helped anyone that needed it, would give the shirt off of his back if someone needed it, he always gave the kids at the post money for the games. I will always remember the help he gave us after my house burnt down and after that, he was a good friend and will be missed by all.”
He is survived by his wife, Felicia; son, Joel Barrs; daughter, Kailyn Barrs of Pinellas Park; mother, Eleanor of Pinellas Park; brothers, Roy Barrs, Gary Pate, and Chris Barrs; sisters, Gina Egliskis and Candice Barrs; a grandson; and his mother-in-law, Loretta Maroonick. He was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Pate.
Services will be held at Bay Pines National Cemetery on Friday, December 28, 2012, at 9:15 AM with Military honors presented by VFW Post # 10094. A Celebration of life will be held at VFW Post # 4364 in Pinellas Park on Saturday, December 29, 2012.

I stil cant believe my brother is gone. From believing he and I would hardly ever talk from when I first met him to becoming the friends we did only proves you cant judge a book. No one ever got me to try more new food then him. I will miss our emails, talks, phone calls when its NYDallas vs FL in anything sports related but most of all his love for his my cousin, Goddaughter, aunt and me. I could never thank him enough for that. Iknew they were sae with him. Although you would never see it from him, it was always there.
