George E. Stewart, 81, of Hawthorne, FL passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the VA Geriatrics Center in Gainesville, Florida after a brief illness.

George was born December 11, 1932 in Auburndale, FL to George E. and Ella Moye Stewart. He attended the Kansas City School of Watch Making in the 1950s and he served in the U.S. Navy where he learned photography. He was a Certified Gemologist and owned and operated Stewart’s Jewelry (formerly Flo’s Jewelry) in Dunnellon, FL from 1957 to 1985. George previously resided in Dunnellon, FL and Dover, FL before relocating to Hawthorne, FL in 1999. George was an avid fisherman and he enjoyed playing billiards. He attended First Baptist Church of Hawthorne, FL and he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Dunnellon, FL for over 50 years and he was a member of the National Rifle Association.

George is survived by his wife Elaine, of Hawthorne, FL; daughter, Nancy, of Daytona Beach, FL; and sister, Patricia of Tampa, FL.  Other survivors include a step-grandson, Joe Reises (Kristen); step-great grandchildren, Tyler and Kaitlyn, all of Dunnellon, FL; nephews, Aaron Stewart of Tampa, FL, James Wilkerson (Jasmine) of Taylorsville, NC, and George Mitchell of Tampa, FL; and a great nephew, Max Wilkerson of Taylorsville, NC and his beloved dog, Oreo.

George is predeceased by his former wife, Dora (2007), son, David (1973), sister, Marie (2007), and brother, A.C. (2012).

A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 2PM at the First Baptist Church of Hawthorne, FL. Internment will take place at a later date at the National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. Veterans Funeral Care is in charge of arrangements.
