Harry Kent Tyree passed away February l5th, 2008 under Hospice Care. Born January 8, 1923 in Chicago, Ill. to the late Harry and Madeline Kent Tyree. He was the oldest of two children and was raised in the Catholic Faith. While attending Tilden High School he broke the Jr. 60 yard dash record. The family moved to Flushing Queens where at 19 he enlisted in the Army and was in the 761st all black tank Battalion. They fought their way through six countries and had 71 tanks shot from under them and lost 34 of their comrades in battle. They earned the name “Black Panthers” a term of dedication, determination, and outstanding performance. The men of the 761st were in combat for 183 consecutive days in 1944 and 1945 – more than any other unit fighting in Europe. They had a reunion every year all over the United States and once in Germany. On April 20, 1978, 33 years later the 761st Tank Battalion was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation by President Jimmy Carter. On returning to civilian life he served 20 years as a New York City Transit Police officer before retiring in 1975. He eventually moved to Tennessee, then in 1990 he moved to Florida to be with his loving companion, Frances Darden. Harry lived life to the fullest enjoying every moment and filled our hearts with unforgettable memories. He will be missed by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends old and new.
