James A. Powers "The Dealer" passed away on May 4, 2009 unexpectedly of pneumonia. He passed away at Bay Pines Veterans Health Care System in St. Petersburg, FL. He resided in Clearwater for the past year.
James had many occupations throughout his lifetime. He was a cook in the Navy onboard the USS Chicago; as a civilian, a factory worker at Tech Tron Tube; a BlackJack Dealer at Oneida Bingo and Casino; and many other odd jobs. He enjoyed spending time with his cat, Huck, who he loved so dearly, his grandchildren, and getting involved with neighborhood associations. He always loved a good argument.
James spent most of his life in Green Bay, WI, and recently moved south to Clearwater, FL to enjoy the warm weather with no snow. He made friends everywhere he went and touched lives of many. Although he did not have a dog of his own, he carried around a pocket of dog biscuits to make a friend for life.
James left behind a daughter, Katy Powers (Andrew Goosman); a son, James Powers; two grandchildren, Tessa and Calvin Goosman, brothers and sisters, Andrew Shandor (Marcia), Andrea Barrett (the late Roger), Danny Shandor (Kathy Gale), Steve Shandor, and Patti Vanden Plas (Al); along with nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by parents Elizabeth Shandor (Champeau), Allan Powers, Andrew Shandor and brother Joseph Shandor.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Veterans Funeral Care of Clearwater, FL, and St. Matthew’s Parish of Green Bay, WI for all they have done. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations may be made in honor of James Powers to his daughter, Katy Powers 1351 Harvey St., Green Bay,
WI 54302. A memorial service will soon follow.

My true friend, rest. Jim, inviting me to Florida during my tough time made such a difference in my life. The few things I was able to help you with were small payment. The bond we formed will remain with me forever. We were suppose to go to Gipper’s next Friday for a fish plate, your seat will be at the table and you’ll be with us. We were not friends for very long but to you that didn’t matter. You told me you knew alot of people but had only a few close friends…..some people do not know the difference.
I enjoyed helping you with your household needs but most of all playing with your sweet cat Huck. Like him, I will miss you. He will continue to be loved by your Grandchildren Tessa and Calvin.

James, we parted when we grew up and went our different ways. You were a very good and most memorable childhood friend who wore your heard on your sleeve for all to see. You spoke your mind regardless if folks liked it or not. That made you someone who is easily remembered and now you will be long remembered. We will miss you but we have to let you go as that is how you would want it. I enjoyed the emails that went back and forth between us in between the thousand miles separating florida and minnesota over the last few years when we got reconnected. You invited me down to florida and I just wished I could have made it. Thats okay as I know we will meet up again. I am honored that you called me your friend. God Bless you and your family. Put in a good word for me up there as I will try and follow in your foot steps to be a good person,God serving, and cat loving.

Jim you were already missed very much when you moved to Florida. You were supposed to come back and see the progress of our two linebackers in training, calvin and wyatt. You always were the one to shock people either in kindness or word. You were a fighter for the greater good. You were an excellent watch dog, that our neighborhood missed the day you moved. I was shocked when I heard the news but thought that this was going to be the way you were always going to go, shocking us one more time. I am sad that we will no longer have our late night conversations, out in the garage over a cig. Thank you for the memories!

Dear James, you were such a character, your bark was truly worse than your bite. On the exterior you appeared to be this hardnose no nonesense guy but to those you knew you knew that inside you were a giant teddy bear. I will miss you dearly my friend especially when i greeted you as “Hi you old dawg” and you would return it with “Hi you sweet young pup”. You are finally at peace now and out of your pain. My heart goes out to your family and grandchildren.

I met Jim through my next door neighbors, Rene and Roy Preston. Rene has been a friend of Jim’s for almost 30 years.
I loved Jim’s irreverant take on life, love, and politics. He was smart, funny, warm, a family man who adored his kids and his grandchildren, and a good friend for the short time I knew him.
Jim loved living in Florida, having his golf cart to tool around the park in, growing his flowers, and trying to keep up with his cat, Huck, who was just as rebelious as was Jim. They were a match.
My dogs sat at the sliding glass doors waiting for Jim to visit next door or here. He always had a pocket full of treats for them and was always good for scratching ears and just in front of the tail (my Susie’s favorite spot).
Jim served as an alternate on our rent negotiations board and was very astute and said the right thing at the right time to get people moving and thinking. He wanted to run for the board of the home owners association and for president of the social club. He would have been an asset at either or both posts.
I was with Jim the night before he died and was quite concerned about him. Unfortunately, I was more concerned than was the VA hospital staff. I hope care improves there as I feel Jim would still be with us had it been better. I wish now I had argued with him and taken him to the civilian hospital here in town, but I took him where he asked to go. He knew he only had a few years left, but neither of us thought that would be the night he would die.
I had the privilege of meeting his daughter, her fiance, Andy, and her daughter, Tessa. They are a fine family and one Jim was justified in being proud of. This has been very hard on Katy and I wish her every happiness and success in life and in her budding nursing career. God bless them all.
I will always remember the times you helped me while I chaired the Brown County Democratic Party in Green Bay. You always made the job interesting. You helped us when it was so needed. You made a difference in our county and in our nation. You understood the meaning and value of life. From the bottom of my heart, Thanks Bud,….You will be missed dearly! The only guy I knew that had a knack for winning raffles! And no one could sell like this guy!
