Larry Alan Matthews, 54, of Tampa, Florida passed away on October 9, 2012. Born August 24, 1958 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Hye Matthews; his son and daughter, Michael Harris and Annastacia Harris.
Larry Matthews grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan and was baptized at Comstock Park Christian Reformed Church; attending through adulthood. As a child he attended West Side Christian School and Comstock Park Public Schools. His family moved to a new home built on his grandparent's farm land, where he attended Kenowa Hills; graduating in 1976.
Larry spent his early life riding his BMX bike, swimming in the creek, and playing in the woods. He loved building forts, playing army guys, and choosing which helmet he would wear for his next adventure. He always wanted to be a protector.
Later in life, Larry played hockey for Kenowa Hills High School. Because of his passion for the game, he would rarely be seen without his hockey stick in hand, skates over his shoulder; heading to the skating rink.
After high school, he chose to join the Air Force as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician. While stationed at Homestead Air Force Base he worked on F-4's as the Wing Commander's Crew Chief (1982-1985). He served overseas at Kunsan Air Base, South Korea working on F-16's (1985-1986) and Kwang-ju Air Base (1988-1989). He honored and protected his country by serving in the Air Force for 14 years.
He loved his country and he loved his family.
