Marjorie Leah McCarthy, age 100, of Lutz, FL, formerly of Columbia, MO went to her Heavenly Father on Thursday, May 2, 2013 and her family rejoices in her reunion with her loving husband, John Patrick McCarthy.
Born March 22, 1913, in Percy, Illinois, Marjorie — a sweet young lady with lovely red hair whom, neighboring farm boys teasingly called "Red" — learned the value of hard work on the family farm. She would recall enjoying playing the piano at revivals along with her father, a well-respected minister. Marjorie left the farm to attend nursing school, completing her training at Elgin State Hospital in 1934. While a nurse at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Marjorie met John at a USO dance. A new and wonderful chapter in her life started when she became his bride on May 5, 1945.
Marjorie and John were blessed with three "sugar lumps," as Marjorie ("Mammy") adoringly called her children, Katherine (husband, Charles) Wallace, John Patrick (wife, Katherine) McCarthy, Jr., and Charles Michael "Mike" (wife, Patricia) McCarthy. Marjorie worked in the pediatric orthopedic ward of Noyes Hospital in Columbia, then as a school nurse in Iowa, and later as an RN at Mid-Missouri Mental Health and for Dr. John Tinsley in Columbia. Marjorie loved attending the Assembly of God Christian Chapel. She was a devoted wife to John, a World War II veteran, who served proudly for 25 years in the Air Force, after which he became a high school guidance counselor, high school principal, and later a professor at the University of Missouri in Columbia. In their retirement, they enjoyed building a quaint log cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks, where they cherished much time with each other and family. She and John resided on Fredora Avenue in Columbia for many years, moving to Lutz, Florida in 2007.
In addition to her parents, Charles and Viola Leming and husband, John, Marjorie was predeceased by her brother, Paul. She is survived by her three children; sister, Ada; brother, Jim; as well as 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and another great grandson on the way in October.
Memorial services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Sunlake Baptist Church, 18908 Sunlake Blvd., Lutz, FL 33558, (813-949-9248 or 933-5583). Visitation will be at 10:15 AM. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia, MO. Suggested remembrances may be made to Sunlake Baptist Church or to Tims Presbyterian Church, 601 Sunset Ln Lutz, FL 33549.
Special thanks are given to Marjorie and John’s kind-hearted caregivers, Wanda, Rosa, and Diane. Thankfully, Marjorie recently enjoyed several 100th birthday parties in her honor. While Marjorie is no longer present here, her place is secure in Christ. The time we had with her has been priceless. She will be greatly missed.

What a beautiful tribute to a wonderful, faithful, Christ-loving mom, grandmother, and great-grandma! She had such a sweet spirit and loved her Lord and her family so much. We’re so grateful for the time we had with her, and celebrate now her new and better homecoming!
Goodbye, Mammy. Love to all the McCarthys.
Mammy was the best Mother-in-Law I could ever have. I miss her sweet smile. She and Pappy gave me a wonderful gift — my husband Mike.
Lovingly, Tricia
A sweet, sweet lady who will be missed by many. I enjoyed sitting with her and singing hymns with her when she attended Tims Memorial PC on many occasions.
What a lovely picture and such a sweet lady. I, too, remember sitting next to her at Tims and helping her find pages in the hymnal – she loved to sing. Mammy will be missed for sure, but is now singing those old hymns with the angels in glory. How beautiful!
Mammy was a very special person. It was an honor to know her and to serve the Lord with her. She will be dearly missed by all of her family in Christ. May the Lord Bless you and keep you and make His face to shine upon you.

As the perfect compliment to Pappy, Mammy was truly the kind, calm spirit that knit the McCarthy family together. Her legacy certainly lives on in the character of her children and her children’s children. The intersection of her life and mine I count as a substantial gift to me from God.
To a wonderful lady who made those who she touched in life a lot better. She will be missed

What an inspiring tribute to a lovely lady! It is a reminder to all that knew her that a life worth living is a life lived in service of others. She reached the end of her faith and is now undoubtedly drinking the heady wine of an endless life. She will be missed, sitting in the front pew, at Sun Lake Baptist Church! Our prayers and condolences to her family and friends.
Dear Ms. Margie I miss you so much. I always will remember you. You are the sweetest lady that I have ever taken care of. You are with God and Mr.McCarthy now and I know you are happy.
I was not only honored to be Marge’s Pastor, but my wife Ann and I were blessed by her friendship. She was truly an inspiration to us and we never tired of hearing the stories of her children and how important each one of them were to her.
Marge was an inspiration to our church, she always sat on the front pew and sang all the songs without ever opening the hymnal.
On Mother’s Day Marge was so proud to be the last one standing when we narrowed down the ages to give flowers to the eldest mother, she was thrilled to be named the eldest mother three years in a row. I’m sure if God had not called her home to be with Him, she would have won the flowers again this year.God has a much more beautiful flower garden this year because Marge is there. We will miss you our dear friend.
Our thoughts are with the McCarthy family during this difficult time. We are blessed to have known Mrs. McCarthy. She is a loving person and will be missed. Mrs. McCarthy will remain in our hearts forever. Love from Nancy Baudo and the Baudo family.
