Marvin Halberstein
4/18/1931 – 4/17/2013
Marvin Halberstein, 81, of Gainesville, FL, passed away peacefully one day short of his 82nd birthday after a long illness.
Marvin was born in Sidney, Ohio, in 1931. He was in the U.S. Army for two years, and then graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in Journalism. He moved to Gainesville, FL in the early 1960s where he was the advertising sales manager for WRUF radio at the University of Florida. He was a longtime fan of both the Buckeyes and the Gators…all things sports-related. Marvin married Mildred Wilson in 1984, became a devoted husband and later, a loving grandfather.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Joe Halberstein. He is survived by his nephew, Howard Halberstein, step sons Sandy and Tom Wilson, and two grandchildren.
Graveside services with honors will be presented at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Avenue, Bushnell 33513.

Thoughts and prayers to the family. Every time I say my sons name I think of Marvin. It is a great reminder of such a lovely man.
Marvin — you were the coolest uncle ever. Im sorry I did not contact you more these last weeks. i hope you enjoyed the week i was able to spend with you. When its my time i will meet you for breakfast — scrambled eggs and lots of ketchup!!!

The College of Journalism and Communications at UF sends its sincere condolences to Marvin’s family. Marvin was a loyal and valued executive of WRUF-AMFM for three decades. His talent as sales manager kept the two stations afloat. I enjoyed working with him over the years. He was especially interested in seeing that Mildred was memorialized in the Gainesville Holocaust Memorial, and we were able to do that. Her name is encased in a manuscript encased forever inside the stone of the memorial in B’nai Israel Cemetery. If the family ever wants to visit, the code for the gate is 1818.

Fondest”funnest” memory I’d like to share: Marvin and Mildred used to make an annual trip to our house for Halloween. Our kids enjoyed watching the neighborhood kids stop by to trick or treat, as much as they enjoyed going out about the neighborhood. My husband would hide under a split table that he fashioned, and create a feast of goodies around a large, central plate that had a very large cover…He would hide under the table, and it was his head that was “on” that plate. Marvin was the one who stood by and put the cover over my husband’s head and then drew the kids into the table to look at the goodies. Then he would ask, “You want to see the big surprise?” and after a few suspenseful moments, would lift the top up as my husband screamed loudly (tempered, of course, relative to the age of the children leaning in). Not a few of the parents were a little startled, as well! THAT was a lot of fun!
Marvin, you loved Mildred so much. I hope she was there to greet you as passed over. Love, mauri
