Michael C. Grogg, 62, of Largo, passed away on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center in Bay Pines, FL. He was born in Fort Wayne, IN, and moved here in 1989 from Painesville, OH.
Mr. Grogg served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Michael was a Sheriff’s Deputy in Ohio for many years and was also a Manager in the graphics industry. He graduated from Ball State University with a degree in music. He was a musician who was a member of the Suncoast Symphony Orchestra and participated in numerous brass quintets. He was also a member of the Wyoming Antelope Club where he was a Range Officer and an Instructor and was also a leader in the Boy Scouts.
He was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Lucille. He is survived by his sons, Michael of St. Petersburg and Zachary of Largo; and his former wife, Catherine Vogelssong.
Services will be scheduled at Bay Pines National Cemetery in the near future.
We had a tradition during orchestra rehearsal breaks and also concerts whereby we stood outside and talked about everything from the music to politics. When we needed a piece of percussion equipment Michael was the first one who had it or knew where he could borrow it. And when we needed drummers Mike and Zach you were recruited. He always talked about you and was QUITE proud of you and all the hard work you did and accomplishments in life. Merry Winter Solstice, Michael. We worked with Michael for fourteen years. Weknew him to be a very interesting person. Work was a hobby while music and photography were his love. He sang the Hallelujah Chorus from memory with us on a number of Easter celebrations along with his tuba performances at St Jerome Church.
He mentored many new employees and friends with his skills and patience. He was proud of Alex and Michael and was concerned that he could only do so much for them. We’ll miss him along with the wit and kindness he brought to everything he did. He was a friend…

I am a snare drummer in the South Pasadena Community Band and I knew Mike as our timpanist (and sometimes tuba and trombone). All the auxiliary percussion equipment he furnished and brought (along with his talents) to our rehearsals and concerts really enhanced our band’s sound and performance. We will continue to use the big identifying banner that he made for our band.
Mike was one of the “good guys” and he is sorely missed by us all.

My most heartfelt condolences to Alex and Zack as you go thru this difficult time. He was always a great source of guidance with his no nonsense approach to all things brought to him. He was a great friend and mentor. I will treasure the days I could escape to his office for our daily chats and his funny, quirky ways of dealing with everything. He was a great man and will always be remembered that way. Your dad will be truly missed.
What a privilege it was to work with Michael every day for the past twelve years. A consummate iconoclast, a bright creative mind, and a friend I looked to for his knowledge, his gloriously irreverent humor, and his kind heart. I miss you more than I can say, Michael. It was a gift in my life to have known you.

Micheal Grogg was a good man and will be missed by a lot of people that probably do not know each other. He was a very knowledgeable man about lots of things. Rest In Peace Micheal.

Alex & Zach, We would like to give our most sincere condolences for the loss of your Father and our friend Michael. He was not only a friend to us both but a mentor as well. Always a fountain of knowledge and willing to share with whoever passed his way. It was a privledge to know such a man who obviously raised 2 fine sons & we’re sure he was proud of. Please accept my condolences for the loss of this wonderful man. I’m sure you will miss him greatly.
Michael was a member of the Suncoast Symphony well before I became its conductor over ten years ago. I always felt fortunate that we had as gifted an orchestral tuba player as Michael. Plus he contributed so much more: designing programs and writing program notes, providing us with many percussion instruments, and playing percussion when needed. He was always ready to pitch in and it is difficult, frankly, to imagine the orchestra without Michael.
Michael will be missed by us all at the Suncoast Symphony. Our prayers and thoughts go out to you.
I had the honor of performing with Michael for over 10 years. He was a very private man but had a great sense of humor. I miss him very much and this will be hard Christmas season of concerts with out him. It was a pleasure having him join the percussion section over the years. He had great rhythm and never lost his place in the music. My family and I are praying for him and his sons.
