Gonzalvez, Rogelio “Roy”, 92, of Tampa, died Friday, October 23, 2009 at James Haley VA Medical Center.
Born in Tampa on November 27, 1916 to Rogelio and Eduveges (Casellas) Gonzalvez of Cuba; his parents were cigar makers of Ybor City. Roy was raised in Cuba but later returned to the United States. Over the course of his life he owned a grocery store, a candy store, and several buildings in Brooklyn, NY. Roy retired as a fabricator of patio furniture and later moved back to Tampa.
Roy was a US Army veteran having served in WWII. He was a member of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church and the Marti-Maceo Social Club in Tampa. Roy was also a worldwide traveler and enjoyed socializing and dancing.
He was preceded in death by his son, Roy. Surviving are his five children: Ninon Bello of Tampa, Nannette Mendoza and Yolanda Rosa of New Jersey, Shirley Samuel and son, Frank “Paco” of New York; sister, Maria Hodges of Tampa; twelve grandchildren: Adolfo Castillo of Tampa, Christina Ahumada of Texas, Courtney and Kelsey Rosa of New Jersey, Dominique Smith, Shawn and Nadia Samuel, and Liza Gonzalvez of New York, David Gonzalvez of Georgia, Keisha Alicea, Larry and Elsie Gonzalvez of Tampa; and five great grandchildren.
A Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Thurs., October 29th at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, 1203 No. Nebraska Avenue, Tampa 33602, (813) 223-7098, with interment and military honors presented at Bay Pines National Cemetery, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd, Bay Pines 33744, (727) 398-9426, following at 1:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Marti-Maceo Club.
