Roy V. Dunlap, age 84 passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2011.

A resident of Largo, FL for 58 years, Roy was born in Harvey, IL on June 7, 1927. He is the oldest of 5 children. Roy enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after he graduated from high school and served for 2 years in WWII as a Radioman Operator Third Class. After he was discharged from the Navy, Roy moved to Florida in 1952 and he worked as a referee at the Clearwater Skating Rink where he met Joann Fillmon and they married on April 9, 1953. In 1954 his oldest daughter, Cheryl was born and 4 years later Theresa was born. Roy and Joann were married for 58 wonderful years.

In the early 60's Roy owned his on T.V. shop in Dunedin, but later acquired a job at Honeywell in the Aeronautics Division as group leader. After 10 years of employment with Honeywell he retired and in his early 40's opened his own Air Conditioning and Heating Co. with his brother Denis. Roy settled into full retirement at the age of 70. After retirement, he continued his love for Ham Radio and made so many new friends around the world.

Through his years Roy made several trips to Europe with his wife Joann and they toured Ireland, Germany, Monaco, Scotland and England. He also made sure he had time for family vacations and traveled to many parts of the United States. He loved NASCAR racing and working on cars and teaching his 2 daughters everything they needed to know about a car. He also loved football, especially the '72 Miami Dolphins, and a game was never missed on Sunday afternoon.

His knowledge of everything was endless. If it broke he fixed it, if it wasn't broke he made it better. Roy never gave you less than his best effort, whether it was a family member or friend. Always made sure the job was done right or made it right. His pride and joy after his wife Joann, his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was his 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, and he still had it when he passed. Even though Roy had 2 brothers, David and Denis and 2 sisters, Karen and Janice, he was very fond of his 3 brothers-in-law, Vernon, Austin and Ronnie and felt like they were one of his siblings.

In his later years, Roy loved visiting his grandchildren, Alicia and Jordan and playing with his great-grandchildren, Lillian, Conor, and Ian.

Roy will be missed by all who knew and loved him and remembered as a loving husband, proud father, wise grandfather, and a kind and affectionate great-grandfather to his family. The world has lost a great man and it will be a little less interesting without him.

A celebration of Roy's life with military honors by the US Navy will be held at Suncoast Hospice at 11 AM on Saturday, August 6, 2011  –  5771 Roosevelt Boulevard, Clearwater 33760.
