Rudolph “Rudy” L. Thompson, 90, of St. Petersburg, FL, died December 8, 2010 at Bay Pines VA Health Care System.
Born in Wittenberg, WI, he joined the Army Air Corps in 1939 and served in the 20th Air Force, 770th Bomb Squadron as a flight Engineer on a B-29 stationed on Tininian Island and was awarded the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of Sunset Country Club and later, Clearwater Country Club. He was a 30 year member of Bethel Lutheran Church and a 22 year member of Lutheran Church of the Cross.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Winona “Nona”; 3 children, John of Greensboro, NC, Dennis (Jane) of St. Petersburg, and Connie DiLeo of LaHoya, Dominican Republic; 2 sister, Louise Lehman of Las Vegas and Marjorie Larson of Racine, WI; 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Sat., Dec. 18th at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 4545 Chancellor Street NE, St. Petersburg, 33703. Interment with military honors will follow at 10:45AM on Monday, Dec. 20th at Bay Pines National Cemetery.
