Veterans Funeral Care Thomas McEwen

Thomas G. McEwen was born May 27, 1925 in Highland Park, IL. After his freshman year at Lake Forest College, he entered the Cadet Program June 14, 1943. Attended Big Spring Bombardier School. Class 44-12, Class 44-12 graduating September 2, 1944 as a second lieutenant. He took crew training in the B-26 Marauders, Barksdale Field and arrived in England December 21, 1944. He joined the 574th BS of the 39th Bomb Group, 9th Air Force based in Roye AMI France. His crew was comprised of Sam Hamilton, pilot, Jerry Moore, co-pilot, Walt Greer, Engineer, Scotty Haolaway, radio operator and Charles Piipenbrink, armorer. He flew with the squadron until they converted to the A-26 Invaders in April 1945. They bombed targets such as Bap Oyenhausen, Worms, Wesel and Celle Germany, specializing in bridge busting and marshalling yards. His awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two clusters, Unit Citation and the ETO Ribbon with three battle stars. Discharged in May 1946. He re-entered Lake Forest College and graduated in 1949. He was in sales and sales management until his retirement in 1990.

He resided in Dunedin, FL with his wife, Doris. His family also includes a son, Doug McEwen of Austin, TX; daughters: Penny Koch and her husband, Bruce of St. Louis, MO; Vicki Cook and her husband, Steve of St. Louis, MO; Patricia McEwen of Chicago, IL; Andrea McEwen of St. Louis, MO, and Jean McEwen and her partner, Carol Sanders of Dunedin, FL; a sister, Helen West of Dunedin, FL; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. 

Graveside services and full military honors with a bagpiper will be 12:45 PM, Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Bay Pines National Cemetery, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., Bay Pines, FL.
