Victoria Pompey

Victoria Yvonne Little was the name given to the second child of Coren and Otis Little of Tallahassee born on July 4, 1930.  Her late brother Clarence welcomed her to this journey. She and Clarence welcomed their brother Horace and sister Deloris to life in Tallahassee where education was the central focus of their lives.  The Christian, educator, mother, competitor, (known as Vickie, Mom, Miss Trip, Miss Pompey, and Granny to us) accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age. She departed Tallahassee in 1952 and took up residence in Clearwater. Here, she attended the Mt. Olive AME Church. In late 1960’s, she became a charter member of the Church of the Reconciler. At the Church of the Reconciler, she served as an Elder, a Sunday school teacher, a choir member and a chairperson of the Stewardship Committee. She returned to Tallahassee to obtain a degree in Education from Florida A and M University, which she received in 1957.  She then returned to Clearwater to pursue a career as a teacher in elementary education.  She taught in Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota counties for over 30 years in Primary education, First and Second grades.  Her passion was teaching children to read, an endeavor she continued after she retired from the Pinellas School system in 1991. While teaching, she was a member of the Pinellas Classroom Teacher’s Association, the Florida Teaching Profession, and the National Education Association. She traveled around the country to conventions and workshops because her love of education.  She was also an avid Bridge player and competed nationally after she retired from the public school system. She became a Master Bridge player and taught the game for several years at various venues around Pinellas county. She developed many lasting friendships while being a member of several Bridge Clubs in the area, the latest club being the Tampa Bay Area Bridge Club, and while traveling to various competitions around the country. She nurtured the community’s children, worked the polls on Election Day, watched football (loved the Vikings of the 60’s and 70’s) and basketball (didn’t like Tim Duncan at all) and loved to decorate her house at Christmas time.

On Friday, December 5th, she departed this life from Morton Plant Hospital, leaving behind her husband Charles; her brother Horace and sister Deloris; her children, Reuben (Carol), Eric (Helen), Byron (Amy), Patricia (Sammy), Linda (Shiller), and Brenda (Thomas),  Chuck (Beatrice); her grand-children, Eura, Eric, Niela, Cameron, Caleb, Eddie, LaShonda, Jules, Ashton, Angelic, Malcolm, Charles, Chas, and Cherry;  her God-son Trumain Bronson; her 20 plus great grand children and her many nephews, nieces, and cousins; and her cherished friends.

A Wake will be held at Church from 5 – 7 PM on Friday, Dec. 12th, 915 Drew Street, Clearwater.  Funeral celebration will be at 2PM on Saturday, Dec. 13th followed by fellowship.
