Sr. Chief Kenneth Elwood Bloyed, USN, Ret., 81, of Oldsmar, FL, passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2012 in New Port Richey, FL.
Born in Salinas, CA on December 8, 1930, Ken was a NAVY officer serving in the Korean War and Vietnam. Ken's Naval career spanned nearly 30 years, mostly on submarines. When asked what he did in the Navy, his reply was “We bored holes in the ocean.” Needless to say, that usually got either a confused look or a smile. He loved all kinds of sports and even played as an outfielder for a city sponsored baseball team while in his late sixties. After retirement, the summer months were spent traveling extensively. All 50 states were visited at least once; touring attractions, camping, fishing and enjoying beautiful scenery and wildlife. It was a wonderful time of sharing the bountiful wonders of our country. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him, especially for his sense of humor and his good and gentle nature.
He served on the following vessels:
USS Essex (CVA9) 1951-1952;
USS Valley Forge (CVA45) 1952-1954;
USS Antietam (CVS36) 1954-1957;
USS Chopper (SS342) 1957-1959;
USS Blueback (SS581) 1964-1967;
USS Batfish (SSN 681) 1973-1977;
He served at the Reserve Center until retiring 1977-1979.
Survivors include his wife, Rosemary; three sons, William (Colleen), Keith (Rosemary) and David; two daughters, Sally (Ken) and Sandra (Mario); two stepsons, Jeffrey and Greggory (Shannon); stepdaughter, Stacy; two brothers, Raymond and Robert; sister, Imogene;17 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November, 24, 2012 at Suncoast Hospice-Roosevelt, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, FL 33760. Interment will be at 12:45 PM on Monday, November 26th at Bay Pines National Cemetery, Bay Pines, FL.

I didn’t know Ken well, but when I met him some years back, he was a wonderful person with a great sense of humor, and caring about his family. Rosemary shared her life with him, I know she will miss him greatly, as will all who knew him. God Bless the family who has lost such a gentle soul. May he rest in peace.

I remember the day Ken and Rosemary gave me a wonderful surprise visit to my home in The Bay Area – They were spontaneous and had that joie de vivre that made them fun to be with. They were a romantic couple that took a chance on love that payed off. He was a blessing that will be missed. My prayers and thoughts are with you Rose. Peace and Love, Marie Canavan
