Anna J. Sutton


Anna Sutton was born on July 3, 1920 in Raritan, New Jersey to Joseph and Anna (Varga) Kovac. She passed away on January 18, 2017 under the care of Suncoast Hospice at the North Pinellas Care Center in Palm Harbor, Florida. Anna served during World War II in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC).

Family

Anna is preceded in death by her loving husband, James, who passed away in 1986. James was a Navy veteran and he and Anna met in New Guinea while they were both serving active duty. She is survived by son Kenneth James Sutton; daughters Patricia Ann (Bill) Connally, Waynetta Marie (John Cushran) Kimbrell, Sandra Louise Lovering and Steven who is deceased, Shirley Ardella (Peter) Girard; sister Margaret Rafferty; 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. 

World War II

Anna was a Private First Class (PFC) in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) during World War II. The Women’s Army Corps was an auxiliary unit created in May of 1942. She worked as a Postal Clerk and a General Clerk during WWII and was stationed overseas in New Guinea for 12 months where she would meet her husband James who was serving in the Navy. At the time of her discharge Anna was eligible to wear the American Campaign Medal, WAC Service Medal, Phillippines Liberation Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon and Army Good Conduct Medal on her uniform.

Services

A funeral mass is scheduled for Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 10:30 am at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Clearwater, Florida. A wake before the funeral mass will begin at 10:00 am at St. Cecelia Catholic Church. Military honors will be performed following the mass by the United States Army. Anna will be buried next to her husband at Clearwater Municipal Cemetery. 

Special Acknowledgements

The family would like to thank the staff of nurses and doctors at Suncoast Hospice and Regency Oaks for the outstanding care that was provided to Anna during her final days. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society
