It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Barbara Wares, aged 74, on January 17, 2025. Born on January 15, 1951, in Dayton, Ohio, she moved to Florida at age 10 and was a longtime resident of Pinellas County. Barbara lived a life full of love, compassion, and dedication to her community and the causes she held dear.
Barbara’s journey began in the charming city of Dayton, where she was welcomed into the world by her loving parents, Thomas F. and Beulah Lee (Issacs) Wares. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and her brother Tom Wares. Throughout her life, Barbara fostered meaningful relationships that transcended mere friendship, becoming a cherished partner to Sandra Heins for over 31 beautiful years. Her sister, Terri Knight, and brother John Wares reside in Melbourne, Australia, and carries on Barbara’s legacy of kindness.
Barbara’s warm heart expanded to include not only her immediate family but also her bonus grandchildren: Morgan McCabe of Leiden, Netherlands, Devin McCabe of Clearwater, Florida, and Owen Ragsdale of Dallas, Texas. She took great joy in their accomplishments and loved them dearly. Close friends Sherri and Robert McCabe of Largo, Florida, along with Cindy Tremaine and Tina Perez, were integral parts of her life, reminding us all how deeply Barbara valued connection.
After a brave battle with cancer, Barbara returned to her role at the Public Library in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she dedicated many years of her life. Her passion for reading was evident in everything she did, with a special fondness for science fiction and fantasy. She found joy in the gripping narratives of “The Walking Dead” and “Game of Thrones,” often sharing her thoughts and excitement about these beloved shows with her friends.
An animal lover at heart, Barbara championed animal welfare causes, devoting her time and resources to improving the lives of creatures in need. Her commitment to charity extended far beyond animals; she was actively involved with forty diverse organizations, including those focused on wildlife, human rights, and historical preservation. Her kindness and compassion touched the lives of countless individuals and animals alike.
A die-hard fan of the Tampa Bay Rays and the Buccaneers, Barbara followed her teams with fervor, finding joy in the unity and excitement of sporting events. Her passion for music was also a defining part of her life; she cherished attending concerts and engaging in lively conversations about her favorite musicians.
Barbara’s funeral service will be held on February 8, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Veterans Funeral Care. In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations be made in her honor to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital and Pet Pal of St. Petersburg, organizations that reflect her lifelong commitment to helping others.
Barbara Wares will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, her passionate spirit, and her belief in the power of community. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love she so freely gave throughout her life.

Barb was one of my favorite people. The kindest heart, the sweetest smile and the most loving Spirit of most anyone I have ever met. I moved out of the area, across the states, to California and overtime I lost track of Barb. However, I never forgot her.I simply love her like so many others do. Barb you made a big difference in my life and I thank you. My condolences to Sandy and to all those who will miss her. Thank you, Barb for a life well lived and loved.
I’ve known Barbara for many years through our dental practice and our church. She is a beautiful soul. She fought her cancer with grace and dignity. She fought all of her challenges with such a brave spirit. She took wonderful care of her mother when she was ill she had an incredible love her animals, and made that one of her giving charities. She was kind, loving, generous, and may her journey home be filled with God‘s love, light and peace, my deepest sympathy to Sandy and all her friends.
