In Loving Memory
Betty passed away September 15th, 2026, peacefully surrounded by family and those who loved her dearly in Treasure Island, FL, the place she loved the most. She will be missed greatly but now rests in the arms of our loving God. She was a devout Christian that shared her faith openly.
Betty was born in Fairmont, West Virginia on January 1st, 1931, and was raised in Lynn, Indiana. After getting married, she moved to Sulpher Springs, Indiana and then moved to New Castle, Indiana as she raised six children. She was a loving mother who had a vision for her children to do their best with God at the center of their lives. While also being a mother, she worked at Sears and Roebuck in credit investigation for many years before retiring to Florida. The vision for her children included sticking close by to one another, doing life with each other, and supporting one another along the way with love.
She was a member of Friendship Community Church for many years and played an active role in their community. Betty was also an active member of the Treasure Island Women’s Club (The Islettes) for many years doing fundraising work for community projects, college scholarships, and buying the fire department their first AED. As a grandmother of many, she loved them well and spent as much time as she could with them. Always fun to be had at grandma’s house!
She is preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Cox Sr. (her children’s father), and her late husband, Wayne Huffman, her parents Robert Sloan and Lillian (Flemming) Sloan, her siblings Robert Sloan, Mary (Sloan) Reed, and David Sloan. Also, her son-in-law, Michael Hargis. She is survived by her children Teresa (Cox) Baker (Alan), Indianapolis, IN, Belinda (Cox) Lunn (Larry), Treasure Island. FL, Roberta (Cox) Buckley (John), (Fortville, IN), Charles Cox Jr. (Kathy), Treasure Island, FL, Edward Cox (Rhonda), Treasure Island, FL, Mary Ann (Cox) Hargis, Treasure Island, FL. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and even great-great grandchildren who were each impacted by her in a positive way.
She was the matriarch for her family, always leading the way. She will be remembered by her love for Jesus, her smile, her strong will, and her determination to always persevere.
There will be a celebration of life on October 17th at her home from 1pm-4pm for family and friends.
