Curtis Sawyer

Curtis “Curt” Sawyer, of Largo (78), died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife and their two sons on Sunday, January 16, 2022. Born on December 4, 1943 in Elfers, Florida to Trudie and Leroy Sawyer, he was the 9th of 11 children. He grew up in Elfers and graduated from Gulf High School, home of the Buccaneers, in 1961. (He would often brag about being an original Bucs fan!)

Shortly after graduating high school, Curt enlisted in the United States Air Force where he trained and served as an electrician./Airman First Class. During his service, Curt was awarded the Air Force Good Conduct medal.  Upon completion of his military duty, Curt returned home to Florida where worked as an electrician until retirement. However, he often said he worked harder after he retired.

Curt worked hard and played hard.  He loved the many family trips to the mountains for hiking, river tubing and snow tubing; but equally enjoyed cruising and the beach.  He was an avid sports fan and bled green and gold. He and his family fully supported USF Bulls Football and were season ticket holders since the their Inaugural season. Football was not enough Bulls! He and his family were also USF Women’s Basketball season ticket holders. On November 11, at the last game he attended,  the Women’s team took the WIN.
Curt was an avid music fan! From oldies, contemporary Christian and hymns, he enjoyed listening to and singing them all.
Curt loved his family and friends and would do anything for anyone and always putting the needs of others before his own. He was a lifelong Florida resident until the Lord called him home.
He is survived by his  devoted wife of 31 1/2 years, Kathy, sons Matt and Josh, daughters Shannon and Letitia, granddaughters Tiffany, Katie, and Gracie, one great grandson, Connor.,  sisters Betty Patterson, Roberta Stafford, Pearl Asbel (PL), and brother Ralph (Betty)
Curt’s Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at 11:00 am at Veterans Funeral Care at 830 N. Belcher Road, Clearwater, Florida 33765.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Suncoast Hospice.
