David Stang – Lieutenant Commander


David Stang, a retired Lieutenant Commander of the U.S. Navy, passed away on April 14th, 2023 at the age of 80. He was born on April 20th, 1942 in Rochester, Pennsylvania to his parents Harold Stang and Wanetta Scheck.

David graduated from high school before enlisting in the U.S. Navy on September 5th, 1961. During his time in the Navy, he attained the rank of E-5 before reenlisting on June 8th, 1965, on board the USS Forrest Royal as an E-6 with a specialty in Radio Mechanics. He attended FLTSonar School in Key West, Florida, Instrument School at NavsColComd Norva, “L” Course at NavsColComd Norva, Basic Electronics at Naval Orientation, and ASW Officer (Anti-Submarine Warfare) training. He continued to serve in the Navy and attained the rank of CW02 (Chief Warrant Officer) on June 1st, 1975. He was then stationed in Londonderry, Ireland, and finished his third enlistment on March 31st, 1976. At this point, he was commissioned as an officer and attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander (03E) on April 1st, 1978. David finally retired from the Navy on November 1st, 1981, in Seattle, Washington. During his time in the Navy, David was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation (2 awards), Navy Achievement Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Award (3 awards), and the Navy Expeditionary Medal.

David is survived by his loving wife, Deanna, of 48 years, and his children: David Stang Jr., Michael Stang, Mark Stang, Luke Stang, and Angelina Stang. He was preceded in death by his two daughters, Kim Fetner (Stang) and Brenda Stang.

In his personal life, David enjoyed camping with his kids, sailing, and riding ATVs at the sand dunes in Florence, Oregon. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed dabbling in oil painting. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

A funeral service will be held at the Bay Pines National Cemetery on May 12th, 2023, followed by a private burial ceremony with immediate family members. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wounded Warrior Project.
