Donald Richard Tierney Veterans Funeral Care

Tierney, Donald Richard, 83, of Largo, FL passed away peacefully on February 24, 2015 at North Pinellas Care Center (Brookside) under the care of Suncoast Hospice in Palm Harbor, FL.

Don was born in Richmond, VA on July 26, 1932. He moved to Bradenton, FL, with his family in 1942. After graduating from Bradenton High School he joined the Navy in 1950. He soon found himself serving in the Korean War aboard the destroyer 777 The USS Zellers as a radar specialist.After being discharged from the Navy and the conclusion of hostilities, he returned to Bradenton.

Don met his loving wife of over 60 years while applying for a job at the Manatee Radio and TV Shop, which at the time, was the only shop on the west coast that offered services on color TV’s. A family run business, Don met Lorraine when his future father in-law directed him to the back of the store to see the nice girl about an application. It was truly love at first sight and following a brief courtship and elopement, the newlyweds found themselves at the University of Florida. Don pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering using the GI Bill. After completing his Masters Degree, the couple moved to Largo, FL. Don began a lifelong career at Honeywell while raising his family.

In keeping with his Naval roots, Don enjoyed racing sail boats on Clearwater Bay. He was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Largo. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Don is survived by his wife, Lorraine; their three children: Darren (Marla) of Wimauma, FL, Doreen (Rick) Natale of Tarpon Springs, FL and Douglas (Paula) of Crystal Beach, FL; and ten grandchildren.

He will be laid to rest at Bay Pines National Cemetery, Bay Pines, FL.  Services are private.
